Review: PERFECT NUMBER Is a Handsome but Frustrating Adaptation
Mar 17th 2013, 04:30

I originally saw Bang Eun-jin's sophomore film Perfect Number at the Busan International Film Festival last October. I am a big fan of the Japanese book (The Devotion of Suspect X by Higashino Keigo) that it was based on and as I felt that the story would be a great fit for Korean cinema my expectations were very high. Too high it seems as I found myself a little disappointed by a film delivering something I wasn't expecting. A reclusive math teacher is smitten with his next-door neighbor who lives with her niece. One day her ex-husband comes to visit and a violent altercation ends with his lifeless corpse hitting the ground. The teacher has heard what transpired and knocks on their door. Quiet, composed...

Bloody Disgusting: New ‘Pacific Rim’ Image Doesn’t Tread Lightly!

New 'Pacific Rim' Image Doesn't Tread Lightly!
Mar 17th 2013, 05:29

Warner Bros. has released a new image from from Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim, and it’s another in a long line of signifiers that suggest the size of the Kaiju. I mean, yeah, big foot print. While I love the trailers for this movie and I’m sure it will be good and all that, I’m also growing a little bit worried that it’s relying on sheer enormity to keep us entertained. I understand that it’s a robots vs. monsters movie in many ways, but the best of these films have human characters that really pop. Hopefully Pacific Rim is has charm to spare beyond the traditional archetypes.

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Head inside for a better look! Pacific Rim crests on July 12th.

The 10 most underrated 'Saturday Night Live' cast members of all time
Mar 17th 2013, 05:56

Snl_collage_photo_galleryWhat makes a "Saturday Night Live" cast member "underrated"? As you'll see in this gallery, it's no one thing in particular. Sometimes an actor's talent only becomes apparent through the prism of history. Others have had the unfortunate timing to appear alongside the show's breakout star. Yet other times, a string of solid, unshowy supporting roles didn't seem as vital to the show's success as the showier breakout characters. We here at HitFix hope to correct some of these oversights by highlighting the ten most underrated cast members in the show's 38-year history. Each was overlooked for different reasons. But all played a huge role in the show's place on the pop culture landscape.

Collider: Abigail Breslin Talks THE CALL, ENDER’S GAME, Vincenzo Natali’s HAUNTER, and More

Abigail Breslin Talks THE CALL, ENDER'S GAME, Vincenzo Natali's HAUNTER, and More
Mar 17th 2013, 05:07

The Call marks a serious turning point for child-star Abigail Breslin (that cute girl from Little Miss Sunshine and Signs). Breslin stars as Casey Wilson, a naive teenager, who after taken hostage by a madman, slowly comes into her own as a woman. Much like Casey's arc in the film, Breslin herself seems poised to transition from the cherub-cheeked roles of yesteryear to more serious adult fare. Just one look at her upcoming slate of films is ample evidence: Ender's Game, Final Girl, Haunter, August: Osage County… With such an eclectic mixture of big budget, Oscar-bait, indie and genre horror films on the horizon, Breslin seems more than up for such a challenging transition. In the following interview with Abigail Breslin, she discusses transitioning to more adult roles, the difficulties of acting in a trunk and her upcoming parts in both the big budget Ender's Game & the indie horror Haunter. For the full interview, hit the jump. There's Actually Blood In James Mangold's 'The Wolverine'!

One element of X-Men Origins: Wolverine that pissed me off to no end was the simple fact that Wolverine never, ever, ever had blood on his hands or claws after viciously stabbing an enemy. His claws remained pristine and shiny throughout the entire film. Along with his healing factor, he also garnered the cleaning power of Mr. Clean. The latest still from The Wolverine shows Hugh Jackman with claws out and they’ve got some blood on them.

FilmmakerIQ.com: DIY Sponge Filter Holder

DIY Sponge Filter Holder
Mar 17th 2013, 05:00

If you’re willing to put your filters in the hands of a sponge – here’s an inexpensive way to hold filters on your DSLR.

A few years ago, photographer Samuel Chapman of The Rocket Factory found himself with an annoying problem on his hands. After purchasing a number of neutral density filters for his DSLR, he found that Nikon's $2,000 14-24mm lens didn't have any good way of being used with a filter.

He had already paid hundreds of dollars each for his fancy filters, so he decided to make a makeshift adapter for the 14-24mm lens… using a sponge. The result is a product Chapman calls the "FX Sponge Filter Holder 5000."

Basically, Chapman purchased a $1.50 all purpose sponge from his local hardware store and cut out a hole in the back for the lens and a square chunk in the front for the filters.
