Open Road To Bring Gregg Allman Biopic To U.S. Theaters
May 18th 2013, 15:41

Open Road Films and Unclaimed Freight Productions' Randall Miller and Jody Savin are partnering to bring Gregg Allman biopic My Cross To Bear to U.S. theaters. Miller and Savin penned the screenplay based on the New York Times bestselling autobiography of the iconic blues singer. Miller will direct. Open Road will handle U.S. distribution. The story will focus on Allman’s early struggles through the formation of The Allman Brothers Band and the group's ultimate explosion on the music scene. Savin and Miller are working closely with Allman and his manager, Michael Lehman, both of whom will serve as Executive Producers. The film is expected to include original Allman Brothers tracks as well as re-recorded performances by the actor/musicians. Production is scheduled to begin late summer 2013 in Georgia. Casting is under way. The deal was negotiated on behalf of Open Road Films by Ortenberg and Ben Cotner, SVP of Acquisitions. Ben Weiss of Paradigm negotiated on behalf of the filmmakers. Miller and Savin recently produced CBGB about the famous New York City rock ‘n’ roll club. CBGB is being repped in Cannes by The Exchange and several large foreign deals are under way.

Documentary director Alex Gibney initially wanted to tell the advocate's story in 'We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks,' but when the website founder wouldn't cooperate, the director decided to work on a profile of Bradley Manning, the Army private who allegedly leaked classified U.S. documents to the website.

When director Alex Gibney began work on his documentary "We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks," he thought he would be telling the story of a charismatic, silver-haired free speech advocate named Julian Assange, who had exposed dark corners of powerful governments and corporations using little more than his laptop.

Awesome Stuff: Cool Product Designs
May 18th 2013, 16:00

For this week's awesome stuff, we've got three different projects that just caught my eye for being different and interesting in a design sense.

  • I don't know about you, but I've had a few too many experiencing having to try to inflate an air mattress of some kind or another, and realizing what a freaking total pain it is using regular valves (not to mention the inevitable annoying emptying process as well). So I have to say that the Windcatcher project definitely piqued my curiosity. I don't understand the mechanism behind it, but it certainly looks like an air mattress that you can fill with 4 or 5 breaths -- and all without having to put your mouth on anything. It looks kind of like magic, so check out the video.
These guys still have a bit of a way to go on the funding front, having raised only about a quarter of the $50,000 they're seeking, but the product definitely has that neat design factor going for it.
  • There's been something of a hipster revival in pinhole cameras lately, it seems, but the ONDU Pinhole cameras are definitely the nicest design I've ever seen. A nice wooden box with no exposed screws. A backplate that's held on by magnets. It just looks cool. Also, bonus points for the cool music in the video (apparently this is the musician.
This project has already surged past its goals, so it's definitely going to get funded, and with another 25 days to go, it'll likely end up much, much higher.
  • Finally, there are times when someone designs something and you wonder why no one else has done it before -- or even why such things aren't common. That was the feeling I got after seeing the Nuplug, which is basically an extension cord/surge protector/outlet that attaches to furniture. So, rather than having your outlets on the wall and behind furniture, you can connect them in a more convenient way. Given how much stuff folks are charging all the time these days, I could definitely see how this could be handy for many people.
The one thing holding me back on this one, frankly, is that it's a bit on the ugly side -- in that it really stands out. Seems like something a little more subtle would be cooler. Maybe future iterations. This one also has a pretty ambitious $75,000 goal, and they're only a little past halfway there with 18 days to go.
That's all for this week...

[Random Cool] Portugal Wins With This Incredible 'Evil Dead' Print Ad!
May 18th 2013, 15:10

I feel like a lot of advertisers have lost focus on what advertising is. Many of the ads we see today just go through the motions, so much so that we literally block them out as they’re blasting across our small/big screens. I went to school for advertising, which is why I’m so incredibly sensitive to how something is being sold to me.

“9, the Creative Shop” out of Portugal has shared an extremely impressive print ad for Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead, which was placed into various newspapers back in April. Title Evil Dead: The Night of the Living Dead in Portugal, the poster was placed on the Obituaries page with a bunch of empty slots where the deceased announcements used to remain. Now that the dead are living, there’s no need for obituaries. “Clever girl,” as Muldoon would say.

What are some of the most memorable ads you’ve seen lately? This is a good exercise to show you how good/bad of a job they’re doing…

Bloody Disgusting: [Saturday Morning Cartoons] Revisiting the Awful “Little Shop”

[Saturday Morning Cartoons] Revisiting the Awful "Little Shop"
May 18th 2013, 15:27

Saturday morning cartoons were hotter than ever in 1991, which is why there are literally a plethora of pilots and single-seasoned shows that failed to make it to a second round.

Such the case with the god awful “Little Shop,” Fox’s attempt at a cartoon based on Little Shop of Horrors, featuring Seymour and the now brunette Audrey as children.

Says Wiki, the concept of the adaptation is credited to Ellen Levy and Mark Edward Edens, and the series was produced by Tom Tataranowicz. The horror elements in previous versions of the story, in which characters are eaten by the plant, are toned down for children in this series.

We’ve added the first episode from the failed first season below for your Saturday Morning Cartoon special. Next week, we promise to get you something awesome.

Wiki explains that the show followed “self-proclaimed nerd Seymour Krelborn, an adolescent boy who works in a flower shop, keeps a pet Venus Flytrap named Junior. Junior sprouted from a 200 million year-old seed and has the ability to talk and hypnotize people. Only Seymour is aware of Junior’s abilities. The flower shop is owned by stodgy Mr. Mushnik, whose daughter Audrey is the object of Seymour’s affections. Audrey, however, does not seem to reciprocate his feelings. Buck-toothed Paine Driller, a neighborhood bully, continuously targets Seymour.

Episodes focused on the pubescent exploits of the leads and frequently featured a moral. They also featured a couple of musical numbers per episode. Consistent with the “urban” persona of the plant in the musical, Audrey Junior raps in the series during his numbers, and speaks in a hip-hop dialect. Also featured are a trio of singing flowers reminiscent of Crystal, Ronette, and Chiffon (the three chorus girls in the musical).

"Star Trek Into Darkness" cruised to more than $21 million at the box office on Friday and J.J Abrams' space epic sequel is on pace for an extended weekend total of around $80 million.

That's big, but on the low end of analysts' expectations and under the $100 million that distributor Paramount had hoped to see. Saturday and Sunday will be critical, and the film received an "A" CinemaScore from first-night audiences, so word of mouth should be strong.

"Fast & Furious 6" raced out of the gate as the No. 1 film in the U.K. and Ireland on Friday, posting Universal's biggest opening day ever in that market with $4.6 million.

That figure beats the $3.6 million that the fourth film in the franchise, "Fast & Furious," opened with in 2009 and is the year's second-best opening day in the U.K., just behind the $4.7 million of "Iron Man 3."

Warner Bros. rolled out "The Great Gatsby" on Thursday in the U.K., and that film has taken in $2.5 million.

Watch: Trailer For Alejandro Jodorowsky's First Film In 23 Years, 'The Dance Of Reality'
May 18th 2013, 16:01

For all the Goslings and Grays and Gatsbys on the Croisette, for some, the biggest news at Cannes this year is the return of Alejandro Jodorowsky. The French/Chilean filmmaker, the man behind cult hits "El Topo" and "The Holy Mountain," hasn't made a film for 23 years, since 1990's "The Rainbow Thief," but is all over Cannes; a documentary about his ill-fated attempt to film "Dune" is premiering, and his return to directing with "The Dance Of Reality" just screened this morning. An adaptation of his own memoir that's drawing comparisons to Fellini, we haven't yet caught the film, but the word is pretty good (read Indiewire's take here). And to tide us, and yourselves over, a new trailer for the film has arrived from French distributors Pathe, and it looks very, very promising indeed, not least for Jodorowsky fans. Take a look below.
