The Thrill Of Losing Your Independence
Apr 6th 2013, 14:30

It is pretty great to be part of something, to no longer be truly independent. I have made & released my movies with great teams of collaborators, so I can’t say I have ever really been independent, but those are all in service of a single goal.  Since coming taking a hiatus from that life, I have a multiple series of goals and a team to work with to execute them, and you know what?  I dig it.

Thursday night the San Francisco Film Society had two very cool and VERY DIFFERENT events packed into it all designed to bring some more focus to the work of over 100 filmmakers we admire (aka the 56th SF Intl FIlm Fest). Both events were excellent and both were inspiring — one a preview via clips for a large audience, the other a night at the science museum with booze & beats and film work on display.

For me, though it was seeing the team’s hard work and enthusiasm on display is such shining glory. Film festival staffs work long and hard for low wages and little acclaim. I am sure this is true at each and every festival. Last night for me was proof that all festivals should be very proud of what you make happen and what you provide your communities. You are lifting our world higher and you make me quite pleased to be part of it.

Filmmakers rarely see all the work that festival workers provide to make your films be discovered and connect with audiences. Thank you team #SFIFF, thank you festival teams everywhere.

It would not even be close to working if it wasn’t for what you do.  You give me hope that we can build it better together.

Critic's Notebook: It may take place in the go-go '60s, but Season 6 keeps the drama's stylish brand in check, and Don Draper in moody control.

Here's how I am afraid "Mad Men" will end next year: With Jon Hamm's Don Draper in a white suit, heading to Studio 54.

Kathy Griffin is now free to pursue that prospective CNN talk show with Anderson Cooper: Bravo has cancelled her late-night gabfest, Kathy, after two seasons, TVLine has learned.

Griffin confirmed the show’s demise during a stand-up performance Friday night at Cincinnati’s Taft Theatre.

Kathy premiered last spring and, despite low ratings, was renewed for a second season (which kicked off in January).

Earlier this year, CNN commissioned a talk show pilot featuring Griffin and her New Years Eve sidekick Cooper. The news net has yet to greenlight the project.

Just a few years ago, had I written a piece entitled "There are no films guaranteed to gross $1 billion this year", you likely would have laughed and said "Of course not!".  As recently as 2010, the idea that any movie could or would gross $1 billion in worldwide ticket sales was somewhat of a pipe dream.  From 1997 to 2006, there were just two films to reach that milestone, they being Titanic  (the biggest movie of all-time with a seemingly insurmountable $1.8 billion) and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, the Oscar-winning chapter to what can be argued is the finest screen trilogy of our time (that's a debate for another day).  In 2006, we saw the powerhouse success of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest which parlayed the unexpected popularity of the first film into an even larger haul for its sequel, breaking the domestic opening weekend record at the time ($135 million) and earning a massive $423 million in America and $642 million overseas.  In 2008, The Dark Knight pulled another "massively popular sequel to unexpectedly well-liked original" trick to the tune of $533 million in America (good for the second biggest grosser of all time in America, if only for a year) and just over $1 billion worldwide despite not playing in China due to that pesky "Chinese gangster hides Gotham mob money" subplot.  2009 saw James Cameron do that trick that James Cameron does yet again, with Avatar earning $1 billion worldwide in about seventeen days and going on to earn an eye-popping $2.7 billion.

Things haven't been going very well for Justin Bieber lately. The singer, who most people think of as a sweet, talented kid, has been acting more like a spoiled brat. He's taken to Twitter to complain about his birthday, then he fainted at a London concert ,was photographed wearing a gas mask and threatened to attack a paparazzo.  That was all before his monkey was detained in Germany.

Kickstarter Campaign For Doc About Marathon Runner Guor Murial - 'Runner Without A Country'
Apr 6th 2013, 14:38

We always like to bring to attention Kickstarter campaigns for films that we think are of interest and filmmaker Bill Gallagher's new documentary currently in production, Runner Without A Country, definitely fits that description.

The film is about Olympic marathon runner Guor Murial, who as one of the "Lost Boys of Sudan", was kidnapped and forced to do manual labor when he was 8 years old. Despite escape attempts he was repeatedly captured and experienced the tragic deaths of eight of his brothers and sisters. He eventually left Sudan for the U.S. 14 years ago where he became a star high school and college track athlete setting new records.

However when he achieved his dream of running in the London 2012 Olympics he was faced with a dilemma when Murial insisted that he would run for South Sudan which the Olympic committee did not officially recognize as a legitimate country.

But Murial stood his ground. As he said about his decision: "Some things are more important than Olympic glory. If I ran for Sudan, I would be betraying my people. I would be dishonoring the two million people who died for our freedom. I want to bring honor to my country….When I run, I want people to see me and say, "He is from South Sudan."

What resulted was a David and Goliath story about one proud and determined man going up against a rigid and entrenched institution.

Gallagher and his crew are currently looking to raise $26,000 to continue filming in South Sudan and have started a Kickstarter campaign to achieve that goal.

You can go HERE to check out their Kickstarter page and you can watch a trailer for the film below:

Watch: First Trailer For 'A Separation' Director Asghar Farhadi's 'The Past' Starring Berenice Bejo & Tahar Rahim
Apr 6th 2013, 14:49

The summer movie season may be headed into full swing, but with the Cannes Film Festival about six weeks away, we're going to be getting a bit arthouse on you from time to time, and this weekend brings with it a fresh look at extensive look at a movie highly expected to high the Croisette.

Asghar Farhadi's previous effort, "A Separation," was nothing short of a sensation, sweeping up the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival, with his leads snapping up Silver Bears for themselves, before going on to win Best Foreign Film at the Oscars. And his latest, "The Past," looks like another compelling domestic drama. "The Artist" star Berenice Bejo, "A Prophet" lead Tahar Rahim and Ali Mosaffa, are the trio that lead the film in the story of an Iranian man who leaves his French wife and children to return to his country. But when he has to come back to France to complete the divorce, he sees his wife has moved on.

Granted, the trailer is in French and thus we don't understand much, but we dig the mood and tone going on and are of course, we're eager to see it. "The Past" opens in France on May 15th, (not so?) coincidentally the first day of Cannes. No word on U.S. distribution yet. Watch below. [Allocine]
