Forbes - Media & Entertainment: In Game of Thrones, Who's The Smartest - Tyrion, Petyr, Varys, Or Tywin?

I'd say Little Finger. (Heavy spoiler alert! read at your own risk!): Petyr has no background, and no backing. He has nothing to fall back on and he fights alone. Tyrion has his family that he often uses as leverage; when he doesn't have his family to back him up, his life sucks. Varys has his mysterious foreign patron, from whom he obviously receives intel, networking, and finance support. Petyr has nothing. He has no family, no mysterious patron, he doesn't even have that much money (sure he owns some shady establishments, but compared to Casterly Rock and a Pentos billionaire ... it's nothing). Petyr sees through people, and he never lets his emotion gets in the way. All three of them have extremely good judgement on character. But Tyrion was betrayed by Shea, he has some serious father issue with Tywin. He manipulates people, but always have some reserve. Varys was wrong about Joffery (who end up killing Eddard, and messed up everything). The book doesn't really tell us how Varys manipulates people, he's taking more of a passive role. Petyr knows everyone's weak spot and sets them up to destroy each other. Petyr masterfully created the illusion of harmlessness. While people come and go, honored or killed, Petyr is always there. Everyone finds him useful, yet virtually no one feels threatened by him. While Varys generates fear and suspicion, Tyrion generates loathing and ridicule, Petyr generates nothing. Even Cercie (who hates almost everyone) find it hard not to rely on him. In this kind of power struggle, survival is the key and the best way to do it is to make yourself harmless. Petyr plays everyone. While other people simply react to what's happened to them, Petyr actively creates chaos, stirs up the dirt, purposefully sabotages relationships, creates suspicion, frames innocent people ... when everyone is fighting each other for reasons they don't even fully understand, he was laughing in his head. Yet, we're never quite sure about his exact goal. It seems he's doing this out of pure hatred and loathing for the aristocrats who despise and loathed him when he was little. That makes him extremely unpredictable and dangerous. In many ways, Petyr is the Joker in Westeros. He just wants to see the world burn. Tywin is a smart, cruel, great strategist, knows almost everything, can manipulate people like no other, can see the bigger picture, yet is still willing to get his hands dirty. He would make a great king if he could sit on the Iron Throne. However, we have to recognize his manipulation was largely based on fear and intimidation. He used his wealth and influence to buy/force people into doing things they might not like to do otherwise. That's less skillful compare to how Little Finger manipulates people. Because buying and threatening people will create resentment, you set yourself as the target. While Little Finger used persuasion and deception, he set up traps waiting for people to walk into them, he subtly nudged people towards the direction he designed. That needs a lot more planning, a lot more intelligence, and skill. On top of that, Tywin had one single fatal weakness: arrogance. Because he's so smart, everything goes as he planned, he dismisses any sign, any suggestion, any feedback that's different from what he had in mind. Most of the time, he's right (and that further confirmed his arrogance). But when he's wrong, the consequences are often disastrous. He misjudged his own son Tyrion, and he underestimated Little Finger. He was played, while he plays others. He's also a piece in Little Finger's game. (I should clarify, I actually like Tywin a lot. He's probably one of my favorite characters in the book. And I really don't like how he died, there're also some weird inconsistency in his character. But still, his arrogance blinded him to danger right next to him). I wonder what Petyr ends up doing with Sansa. If anyone can be "the" Queen, it's Sansa. (No, not Dany, I like the girl, but Petyr could play her like a violin.) This question originally appeared on Quora. More questions on Game of Thrones (TV series): Is the look of the Stark children significant? What makes Tyrion Lannister such a compelling character? Who is your favourite character in GOT? And, why?

China Tightens Its OverSight On Apple
Mar 30th 2013, 15:02

I have to admit that I don't really see anything wrong with some of the things that China is allegedly doing to Apple. Oh, I know there are pieces flying around out there that this is all just part of the Middle Kingdom's attack on foreign companies. That's it's a plot to do Apple down. But in terms of what is actually being said and done it doesn't look all that bad to me: BEIJING—A Chinese regulator said it would heighten supervision over Apple Inc.'s consumer-rights practices as state media continued to attack the company over its after-sales practices.

Review: Omar Rodriguez Lopez's 'Los Chidos' Is Wild, Wacky, Weird, Bloody & Bold
Mar 30th 2013, 14:00

Not everyone is going to be ready for the ride through "Los Chidos" that director Omar Rodriguez Lopez offers up. But his willingness to scare off a few of the faint of heart preserves his commitment to a truly bold and unique vision and an aesthetic all his own. This is the fifth feature film from the Mars Volta guitarist and only the second to play at a festival, and it's unlike anything you've ever seen. Could this be the birth of a new auteur? Meet the Gonzalez family. They run a tire shop in Guadalajara and lead a life of wanton laziness together, hitting the bar as a family, talking shit about everyone and slurping up the delicious tacos Mama makes for them every day. Meet Rulo, the Gonzalez brother's friend. He's newly wed to Alma, not to mention an abusive sociopath and transvestite having an affair with the local bar owner. Alma is so dedicated in her love for Rulo that he easily manipulates her into the emotional, physical and sexual abuse he subjects her to. Meet Kim....

Apple's iRadio Is On The Way And They Seem To Be Getting The Songs Cheap
Mar 30th 2013, 14:06

A streaming radio service from Apple has always seemed to be a logical thing for the company to do. They've got all those users of their hardware, they've got all the relationships with the music companies through iTunes, so why not? There has though been one sticking point. Given that we're now being told that iRadio is on the way it would appear that they've overcome that one problem. The problem being of course, how in heck do we make it profitable? Negotiations between Apple and record companies regarding Apple's rumored 'iRadio' music service are progressing, The Verge reports as one tidbit in a larger article about the music industry in general. OK, so what is said there about those negotiations? Much has been written about Apple's plan to launch a Pandora-esque service this year. Now multiple music industry insiders have told The Verge that significant progress has been made in the talks with two of the top labels: Universal and Warner. One of the sources said "iRadio is coming. There's no doubt about it anymore." Apple is pushing hard for a summertime launch. The big question though is, well, how do you make such a service profitable? The New York Post reported last month that Apple wants to pay 6 cents per 100 song streams. According to the Post story, Pandora currently pays under the statutory rate 12 cents per 100 spins. By comparison, Spotify pays as much as 35 cents. Maybe the record companies will agree to that, maybe they won't. But that is indeed the basic problem with such radio streaming services at present. They've very like the early internet companies, losing money on every transaction and hoping to make it up in volume. They simply cannot (at present at least) attract enough advertising at a high enough rate to pay for those music royalties. Thus they just cannot make money. If Apple can break this logjam by getting the royalty rate down then it could be a very profitable business for the company. For as Spotify and Pandora have both shown there's a decent enough demand for such music streaming services. It's just that the cost of the inputs is too high at present for them to work economically. Get those input costs down, something Apple might be able to do given its heft and weight in the marketplace, and voila, a nicely profitable opportunity.

Doctor Who News: David Tennant, Billie Piper On Board for 50th Anniversary Special
Mar 30th 2013, 14:31

At least one former Time Lord and companion — David Tennant and Billie Piper– are officially on board for Doctor Who‘s 50th anniversary special, to start filming this week in the UK.

Additionally, John Hurt (Alien) has been cast in the special, which was written by Steven Moffat and will be directed by Nick Hurran.

Tennant made his debut as the Tenth Doctor in June 2005, and last filled the role on January 1, 2010. Since exiting Who, he has appeared in the miniseries Single Father, The Escape Artist and Spies of Warsaw (premiering April 3).

Piper played companion Rose Tyler starting in May 2005, and exited the series with Tennant in his final episode, “The End of Time.” She went on to headline the series Secret Diary of a Call Girl for four seasons.

Also as part of the 50th anniversary plans, BBCA is co-producing a TV-movie chronicling the series' genesis and the Time Lord's maiden voyage on Nov. 23, 1963. An Adventure in Space and Time will star David Bradley (aka the Harry Potter films' Argus Filch) as William Hartnell, the series' first Doctor.

Links 30 March: So, Does Anyone Actually Want A Facebook Phone?
Mar 30th 2013, 13:52

The story's out that Facebook is to announce a Facebook phone this coming week. The big question of course will be, well, does anyone actually want a Facebook phone? HTC's Status may not have been a tremendous hit, but it looks like Facebook hasn't severed its ties with the smartphone maker just yet. According to TechCrunch and New York Times sources, April 4th's "Come See Our New Home on Android" event is set to feature an HTC smartphone with a custom, Facebook-centric OS. It's perhaps the next best thing to a phone designed and manufactured by Facebook, but instead, HTC will be tasked with creating the hardware. There's a little more to it than just the hardware: Foxconn could have been tapped to supply that. It's the software layer that Foxconn or other assemblers couldn't have provided. What such a phone might mean? Constant, close contact with your friends. That's the promise of a "Facebook phone." The modified Android OS and mobile homescreen replacement that sources tell us Facebook will unveil April 4th pushes your social life to you so fetching it isn't interruptive. The news feed brought us ambient intimacy, but Facebook's homescreen could turn that social graph awareness into a sixth sense. A "sixth sense" might be taking things a little too far but certainly, a phone with Facebook as the opening screen would make the social media more discernible.

[Indie Horror Spotlight] 'Homesick' Combines 'Slender' And 'Clock Tower' With Terrifying Results

Welcome to the new and improved Indie Horror Spotlight! See that hologram behind you? THAT’S PART OF IT. Okay, no holograms, but that would’ve been cool, right? Unfortunately, that’s not within our budget. Until we get our hologram funding, you’ll have to sit back and enjoy this brand new edition of IHS. What makes this one particularly special is I decided to record myself playing the game. Yes, I freak out. Yes, I curse like a sailor. And yes, it’s embarrassing.

Tonight, it’s all about the incredibly freaky indie horror game Homesick.

Homesick — not to be confused with the other indie horror game with the same name — is a 2D pixel-art side-scrolling game in the same vein as Home and Lone Survivor. Unlike those two games, this is free, and it’s best enjoyed in small chunks of time.

The game was created by Chloe Sagal, who describes it as a “short point-and-click adventure game, it’s kind of in the style of the old clocktower games, except without the unnecessarily slow text of the PS1 release.

It’s freaky, and wonderful, and I’ll definitely be returning to it as soon as figure out what the hell I’m supposed to do.

Until then, enjoy this video!

If you’d rather play this yourself, you can download it here.

Have a question? Feel free to ever-so-gently toss Adam an email, or follow him on Twitter and Bloody Disgusting.

Were These Critics On Target?
Mar 30th 2013, 12:49

This week in music, Dido made her return with "Girl Who Got Away." The album was an attempt at a fresh sound, but critics felt the project's "cool factor" seemed a little forced. Her duet "Let Us Move On" with hip-hop fave Kendrick Lamar was taken as a glaring example of this fact. The Strokes' "Comedown Machine" presented a band that seems to have lost its chemistry and Lil' Wayne's "I Am Not Human II" received negative marks for being a little stagnant. The rapper didn't bring as much energy as with his last album. Rounding out this week's new music was One Republic's "Native, which lost points for its lead singer's bland delivery.

In movies, "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" was an overwhelming mix of explosions and shootouts that lacked a solid storyline, leaving most critics extremely confused. "Welcome to the Punch" wasted a strong cast on an unrealistic film that failed to allow viewers to connect with it's characters. It was praised for being well shot, but that is about it. Tyler Perry's "Temptation" was, well, just terrible and"The Host" was a boring take on a story we've heard before -- aliens take over earth and humans must find someway to survive.

As always, we have gathered all of the week's toughest reviews in the slideshow below. Do you agree with the critics? Let us know in the comments section.

Celebrity Week In Review: Amanda's Bizarre Selfies And More
Mar 30th 2013, 13:06

What a week -- well what a week, for Amanda Bynes.

The troubled 26-year-old was spotted acting bizarrely (again) in Times Square then hopped on Twitter to talk about it. Plus, she uploaded seven weird "selfies" to prove she's as strange as she appears.

Also this week, Justin Bieber spoke out about his recent behavior, saying that he's "young" and makes "mistakes."

"I know who I am and I'm not gonna let negativity towards me bring me down," Bieber told Us Weekly. "This business can break you down, but I have a strong team around me, and my family and all the fans... I'm not perfect but I'm growing and trying to be better everyday. That's part of life."

Speaking of being perfect, both Britney Spears and Halle Berry proved they're just about there as they flaunted their famous figures in bikinis. Britney looked better than ever in Malibu, while Halle showed off her curves in Hawaii. Plus, did we mention Kate Beckinsale looked red hot in a white bikini in Mexico?

And while we're on the subject of curves -- have you seen Kim Kardashian's!? Her baby bump has made it's big debut.

A 'Gangs Of New York' TV Show
Mar 30th 2013, 13:20

NEW YORK — Martin Scorsese is developing a TV series based on his 2002 film "Gangs of New York."

The director is partnering with Miramax, which released the Oscar-nominated film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Daniel Day-Lewis. The planned show doesn't yet have a TV network.

The series expands on the brutal, 19th-century New York gang world of the film. Miramax says the series will chronicle the birth of organized crime in not just New York but also in cities such as Chicago and New Orleans.

In a statement Thursday, Scorsese says the era was too rich to fully explore in a two-hour film. He says the series "allows us the time and creative freedom to bring this colorful world, and all the implications it had and still does on our society, to life."

More Bad News For Justin Bieber
Mar 30th 2013, 13:07

BERLIN -- Justin Bieber had to leave a monkey in quarantine after landing in Germany last week without the necessary papers for the animal, an official said Saturday.

The 19-year-old singer arrived at Munich airport last Thursday. When he went through customs, he didn't have the documentation necessary to bring the capuchin monkey into the country, so the animal had to stay with authorities, customs spokesman Thomas Meister said.

Bieber performed in Munich on Thursday, beginning the latest leg of his European tour. He later tweeted: "Munich was a good time. And loud. The bus is headed to Vienna now. U coming?" He didn't mention the monkey.

The Canadian singer is giving several concerts in Austria and then in Germany over the next week.

Bieber had a trying stay in London recently. The star struggled with his breathing and fainted backstage at a show, was taken to a hospital and then was caught on camera clashing with a paparazzo. Days earlier, he was booed by his beloved fans when he showed up late to a concert.
