If you want to know why studios obsess over franchises, look no further than this weekend's box office results. The Die Hard series kicked off in 1988 when Bruce Willis' John McClane reluctantly battled German terrorist who had taken a group of hostages (including McClane's wife) at  a Christmas party in downtown Los Angeles. Twenty-five years and five movies later, the franchise still packs a punch. A Good Day To Die Hard topped the box office this weekend with an estimated $25 million, according to Exhibitor Relations.
