Spielberg Taps Indie Colin Trevorrow to Direct 'Jurassic Park 4'
Mar 15th 2013, 00:52

"Thrilled to have director on JP4, Colin Trevorrow, an exciting young filmmaker who understands and respects the world that is Jurassic Park," tweets @LeDoctor, aka producer Frank Marshall.

Colin who? Well, in the honorable tradition of tapping a gifted indie filmmaker to take on a studio project, Marshall and exec producer Steven Spielberg have turned to indie writer-director Colin Trevorrow to direct "Jurassic Park 4."

No, it's not that outlandish. Sequels are a great place to try out someone new who you can control on a franchise whose template has been established but could use some fresh blood. Think Christopher Nolan and Marc Weber, who each took big leaps after indie success with "Memento" and "(500) Days of Summer," respectively.

Trevorrow did a superb job with 2012 Sundance hit "Safety Not Guaranteed," a critically praised sci-fi dramedy starring Mark Duplass and TV actors Aubrey Plaza and Jake Johnson, who were all first-rate and funny. The film navigated a tricky narrative with tonal shifts and real emotion. It worked. (Here's my interview with him.) His screenwriter Derek Connolly won the Sundance Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award and Best First Screenplay at this year's Independent Spirit Awards, where Trevorrow was nominated for Best First Feature.

The fourth "Jurassic" installment from Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment will be shot in 3-D. The blockbuster franchise has grossed $1.9 billion at worldwide box office since the first film was released in 1993.

Marshall and Patrick Crowley will produce with Spielberg as executive producer.  The script was written by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, who successfully rebooted another major studio franchise, "Rise of the Planet of the Apes."

To build up interest in the sequel, Universal will release the original "Jurassic Park" in 3-D on April 5 to bring the Oscar-winner to a new generation of moviegoers.
