Lea Michele Attends Friend's Party, Looks Beautiful
Aug 3rd 2013, 20:35, by Liat Kornowski

It's been three weeks since Lea Michele's TV and real life boyfriend Cory Monteith tragically passed away, and the actress is showing signs of picking up the pieces and starting her life back up again.

After tweeting her thanks to friends and fans for their support, and after surfacing for the first time since Monteith's passing with a necklace that spells "Cory," Michele was spotted today heading to a friend's party in Beverly Hills, Calif.

The actress looked absolutely stunning in a short, white frock, high heels and dark shades, her hair in tousled waves. Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly recently said Michele has been "the most extraordinary human being and a pillar of strength" as the cast of "Glee" prepares to deal with Cory's passing on the show.

Russell Brand either slammed Katy Perry's sack skills, or really showcased his sexual compulsions and addictions in a way that's too flippant to be looked at kindly.

Hollywood Elsewhere: Polanski Greenberg

Hollywood Elsewhere
Movie news and opinions by Jeffrey Wells
Polanski Greenberg
Aug 3rd 2013, 22:47, by Jeffrey Wells

Roman Polanski-philes now have James Greenberg‘s Roman Polanski: A Retrospective to add their biographical collection. I’ve torn through about half of this 287-page book since returning from New York on Thursday night, and I can say without question that Greenberg’s essays on Polanski an∂ his films are as authoritative, perceptive and well-finessed as F.X. Feeney‘s in his 2006 Polanski book, and that the photos in this coffee-table hardback are second to none. It’s both easy to read and easy not to read, but you’ll want to read it.

Greenberg and I did a phoner this morning around 10:30 am — here’s the mp3.

I started things off by mentioning a Polanski quote found on page 99, where Greenberg’s discussion of Polanski’s Macbeth (’71) begins. It’s a quote that Quentin Tarantino and every Tarantino-wannabe wanker asshole who’s ever directed a violent scene “in quotes” — i.e., one that’s about style or fashion or irony or whatever bullshit affectation — need to consider. “You have to show violence the way it is,” Polanski says. “If you don’t show it realistically, that’s immoral and harmful. If you don’t upset people, that’s [an] obscenity.”

At the same time don’t forget that Polanski knows how upset and spook audiences as effectively as any recognized horror maestro, and more profoundly at that. His chilling, nearly horrific rendering of the “Banquo’s ghost” scene in Macbeth is a classic of its type, I feel.

I could go on and on but it’s all in our discussion. Just listen to it.

Los Angeles-based fans may want to drop by Book Soup (8818 W. Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood) on Tuesday, 8.13, at 7 pm for Greenberg’s book-signing and discussion. Five days later he’ll introduce a special American Cinematheque double-bill screening of Rosemary’s Baby and Repulsion, which will begin at 7:30 pm, and will also hang around for a book-signing.

"James Greenberg's Roman Polanski: A Retrospective is a brisk study of the director that is full of insight, extremely well-written, very well judged and handsomely presented. I read it in a single sitting and it continues to reverberate with me. It is a first-class job about a first-class director, and marks, as well, the debut of an important new critical voice." — Richard Schickel.

Here’s the “sweet oblivious antidote” passage from Macbeth.

R.I.P. John Palmer
Aug 3rd 2013, 22:19, by DAVID LIEBERMAN, Financial Editor

NBC News just announced that long time anchor and correspondent John Palmer has passed following a brief illness. In his 40-year career, which ended with his retirement in 2002, he was a familiar presence in the network’s coverage of national and international affairs. He covered the administrations of Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan as NBC’s White House correspondent and in 1980 delivered the first reports of the aborted rescue of U.S. hostages in Iran. He also reported the 1986 explosion of the Challenger Space Shuttle. Palmer was news anchor on The Today Show from 1982 to 1989, a period when it became the top-rated morning show. NBC called Palmer “a brilliant, brave, and tireless journalist who guided viewers through many of the most significant events of the past half-century – from the early days of the civil rights movement through the tragedy of 9/11. ”

Here’s the network’s statement:

"We are deeply saddened to share the news that we have lost a valued friend and colleague. Long-time correspondent John Palmer passed away today after a brief illness.

"John was a brilliant, brave, and tireless journalist who guided viewers through many of the most significant events of the past half-century – from the early days of the civil rights movement through the tragedy of 9/11. He covered five presidents and traveled to every corner of the world, always showing the empathy and compassion that helped set him apart. His kindness is remembered by all of us, and it built lasting bonds throughout our news division.

"John held many positions over the course of his long career with NBC News, but his most treasured role was that of husband and father. Our love and support are with Nancy, Molly and Lee, Carter, Hope, and the entire Palmer family."

Barry Diller’s company, which bought Newsweek in 2010, will manage the publication for a transition period of up to 60 days. IBT says that it will build the once iconic newsweekly into a global, online destination for news and analysis. It also will maintain license agreements to publish Newsweek in overseas markets. “We believe in the Newsweek brand and look forward to growing it, fully transformed to the digital age,” says IBT co-founder and CEO Etienne Uzac. “We respect the brand’s long history of delivering high-quality, impactful journalism and believe this aligns well with IBT Media’s culture and mission. We look forward to working together to create a profitable and successful enterprise.” IBT, founded in 2006, also publishes Medical Daily, Latin Times and iDigitalTimes.

TOP 5: First Trailer for THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY, 2 GUNS Interviews, AMERICAN HUSTLE, Short Film TRUTH IN JOURNALISM, TCA Press Tour Coverage
Aug 3rd 2013, 21:50, by Jason Barr

As great a time as I've had at the movies this summer, basking in the glow of giant blockbuster after giant blockbuster, watching The Way, Way Back last weekend was a relief. A barely average waterpark stood in place of the massive action set pieces I had grown accustomed to. A teenager from a broken home struggling to find a shred of self-confidence was the substitute for the oft-used extinction of civilization as we know it stake. Although I hesitate to call the film great (I would reserve that attribute for the similarly-themed Adventureland if pressed), it was exactly what I needed at the time: a small-scale comedy/drama with both feet planted firmly on the ground and characters I could invest in. With films like The Way, Way Back currently playing nationwide, if you're still suffering from blockbuster sensory overload then you only have yourself to blame. My recommendation for curing the common blockbuster aside, this week's Top 5 includes the moving first trailer for Ben Stiller's The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, 2 Guns interviews with director Baltasar Kormakur and more, the first trailer and official images from David O. Russell's American Hustle, Joe Lynch's very cool short film Truth in Journalism featuring one of my favorite Marvel characters, and our own Christina Radish covering the heck out of the TCA Press Tour with Breaking Bad, Homeland, and Game of Thrones related posts. Let's meet on the other side of the jump for a brief recap and link to each of the above. 1. ...

45 Pictures From Hero Complex Gallery's Bleeding Metallics Show
Aug 3rd 2013, 21:51, by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub

Last night in Los Angeles, Hero Complex Gallery opened their new show Bleeding Metallics.  As you can probably tell by the title, the art was printed with metallic inks, crafted out of metal, using metallic paints and papers, and more.  A few minutes before the doors opened, I walked around the gallery taking pictures of everything on display.  If you're a fan of cool art, The Iron Giant, Iron Man, Astro Boy, Silver Surfer, Futurama, Battlestar Galactica, Star Wars, Robocop, and Aliens (just to name a few), hit the jump. For those in the Los Angeles area, I definitely suggest stopping by the gallery to see the art for yourself.  However, if you see anything you like, you definitely want to click over to Hero Complex's website because everything you see below is now available online.  Some of it is already sold out so don't wait too long to buy something. click on any image for high-res [gallery columns="1" link="file" ids="274179,274180,274181,274182,274183,274184,274185,274186,274187,274188,274189,274190,274191,274192,274193,274194,274195,274196,274197,274198,274199,274200,274201,274202,274203,274204,274205,274206,274207,274208,274209,274210,274211,274212,274213,274214,274215,274216,274217,274218,274219,274220,274221,274222,274223,274224"]
