TCA: NBC Will Wait And See About Covering Russia's Anti-Gay Laws During Winter Games, But Takes Firm Stand Against Monkey-Comedy Interruptions

NBC Sports Group chairman Mark Lazarus tried to split the baby and wound up butchering it this afternoon at TCA Summer TV Press Tour 2013, when he said the network's upcoming coverage of the Winter Olympics in the Russian city of Sochi "comes with political and social issues" which NBC will address — "as they are relevant at the time of the game, as has always been the case." Then, without missing a beat, he began to "we cannot wait to get to Sochi, very optimistic about the U.S. team, biggest Winter Olympics ever," blah blah, blah, while TV critics in the hall tried to recover from the whiplash. Russia's newly-adopted anti-gay laws have some calling for NBC to boycott the Games (The International Olympic Committee has said it will "work to ensure" that LGBT athletes competing in the games will not face danger or legal issues).

Among those calling for boycott, HRC President Chad Griffin reportedly wrote a letter to NBCUniversal CEO Stephen Burke, saying the media conglom has a “responsibility to expose this inhumane and unjust law to the millions of American viewers who will tune in to watch the Games.” Griffin said it would be wrong for NBCU "to air the opening ceremonies, which is an hours-long advertisement for the host country, without acknowledging that a whole segment of the Russian population — not to mention foreign athletes and visitors — can be jailed for an immutable aspect of their identity.”

NBC's response –  at the Press Tour anyway — was Lazarus's baby-splitting act: "The IOC has addressed it with the Russian government and has been assured athletes, fans, and the media there will not be any issues with regard to what takes place during the Games," he said. "Right now they have a law that is the law of their land,” he said, stating the obvious, and adding the even more obvious, “governments across the world have different laws." “It exists," he continued, warming to his theme. "We don't know what it's going to mean to us, so we don't know how we're going to cover it." Then he added, limply, that NBCUniversal believes in "equal opportunity for all" and that he didn't think the Russian laws where in the spirit of The Games.

This would be a good time for NBC Sports to replay that footage of “Miracle on Ice” medal-round men’s ice hockey game during the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid, New York, in which the underdog U.S. team beat the Russian team. Sure enough — here it comes!

Lazarus did, however, take a strong anti-rannygazoo-from-NBC Entertainment stance about the upcoming Games. Olympics-interrupting premieres of comedies starring monkeys — or other celebrities, for that matter –  will absolutely not be tolerated during NBC Sport's coverage of the Sochi Games, he promised, adding,  "I don't think we'd put ourselves in a position to do that again," he said in re the network’s notorious interrupt of the London Summer Games Closing Ceremonies to premiere its Crystal The Monkey starrer Animal Practice.

Well that's a relief, anyway.

Dan Harmon Talks RICK AND MORTY, Working for Adult Swim, Animation vs Live-Action, COMMUNITY, and Much More
Jul 27th 2013, 21:01, by Christina Radish

While at the TCA Press Tour, Adult Swim presented their latest animated series, Rick and Morty, from co-creators Dan Harmon (Community) and Justin Roiland.  During the interview, Harmon talked about how he came to be doing an animated series at Adult Swim, what influenced this concept, what he can do with an animated show that he can't do in live-action, and how his experience with Adult Swim has been, compared to other networks.  He also talked about how his work for Rick and Morty compares to that of Community, finding a way to be creatively successful without some of the turbulence that has come with his career, and the possibility of a sixth season of Community.  Check out what he had to say after the jump.  Question:  Did Adult Swim come to you with the idea for this, or had you always had an animated thing in your mind? DAN HARMON:  I'd been talking to Adult Swim for a long time.  I've always admired the things they were doing over there, and it was just a matter of when the right project would come along.  My insecurity about getting older and getting hackier made doing something on Adult Swim a practical choice.  I was incredibly attracted to the idea of finding the semi-marketable version of these characters, so we started talking about it and came up with this stuff.  What influenced this concept? HARMON:  For me, the influences are actually more in British sci-fi stuff that I grew up reading, like Hitchhiker's Guide to ...

Editor Alisa Lepselter Talks Blue Jasmine, Her 15th Woody Allen Collab
Jul 27th 2013, 21:00, by John P. Hess

The Credits interviews Alisa Lepselter on her process working as Woody Allen’s editor.

Woody Allen - Blue Jasmine

The Credits: You've been working with Woody Allen as editor since Sweet and Lowdown (1999). What's your work process with him like and has it changed at all over time?

Alisa Lepselter: Not that much has changed, in that because of the way he makes films that are specific to him, he doesn't want to edit the film until he's shot the whole thing. It's unusual. Most directors have the editor doing a rough cut as they're shooting, because they don't have the time to omit that step. Woody has a lot more freedom to work at his own pace, and he wants to be in the cutting room with me from day one when he's done shooting. He comes in and we review all the material, and start cutting from the beginning, from scene one, sequentially, which is also very helpful, because you understand what the tone is as you're going along. But it's a luxury that most people don't have, to work that way, and that's the only way I've ever worked with him, and that's the only way he has, apparently, ever worked with anyone, so that's the same.

One thing that's been different is that he's been traveling more, to go shoot his films overseas, and I don't go overseas with the crew, mainly because we're not going to cut it anyway until he comes back, and I can screen the dailies here, and make notes and talk to him if there is anything I have issues with.

Entertainment on HuffingtonPost.com: Grammy Award-Winning Musician Dead At 74

Grammy Award-Winning Musician Dead At 74
Jul 27th 2013, 18:17, by AP

Grammy-winning musician JJ Cale, whose best known songs became hits for Eric Clapton with "After Midnight" and Lynyrd Skynyrd with "Call Me the Breeze," has died. He was 74.

The performer and producer's manager Mike Kappus has told The Associated Press that the architect of the Tulsa Sound died Friday night of a heart attack at Scripps Hospital in La Jolla, Calif.

Born John Weldon Cale in Oklahoma City, he cut a wide path through 1970s rock `n' roll, influencing some of the most famous musicians at the time with songs that were laid back and mellow, yet imbued with a driving groove.

Neil Young, Mark Knopfler and Bryan Ferry are among his many fans in the music world.

A former member of the Grand Ole Opry touring company, Cale never rose to the level of success of his admirers, but his fingerprints could be heard all over the genre in the 1970s, and his music remains influential.

His album with Eric Clapton "The Road to Escondido" won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album in 2007.

In 2006, Cale told the AP in an interview "I'd probably be selling shoes today if it wasn't for Eric."

Clapton also recorded Cale's "Cocaine," "Travelin' Light" and "I'll Make Love To You Anytime."

Artists including Santana, Johnny Cash and The Allman Brothers have all covered Cale's songs.

Cale was asked on his website if it bothers him that "contemporaries and critics list him amongst legends, and fans might love his songs yet not even know his name?"

"No, it doesn't bother me," he said with a laugh. "What's really nice is when you get a check in the mail."

Familiar Face Back For More 'Star Wars'
Jul 27th 2013, 16:37, by Matthew Jacobs

The new "Star Wars" trilogy is gaining another familiar face in John Williams, who composed the scores for all six of the saga's previous entries. Following much speculation, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy announced at this weekend's "Star Wars" Celebration festival in Germany that Williams will resume his work with the series.

Williams is an indelible part of the "Star Wars" legacy, having won the 1977 Oscar for Best Original Score, for "A New Hope." The composer received a second nomination for his Galaxy Far, Far Away work for 1980's "The Empire Strikes Back," before going on to complete the scores for "Return of the Jedi" and the prequel trilogy.

The five-time Oscar winner -- who also garnered awards for "Fiddler on the Roof," "Jaws," "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" and "Schindler's List" -- joins a slate of "Star Wars" veterans who have signed on to the highly anticipated J.J. Abrams update. Lawrence Kasdan, who wrote "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi," will serve as a creative consultant, as will George Lucas (sort of). The original acting trio of Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia) and Harrison Ford (Han Solo) are slated to reprise their roles. Williams and Co. will be working with a script from Oscar winner Michael Arndt ("Little Miss Sunshine," "Toy Story 3").

Watch Williams discuss scoring "Star Wars: Episode VII" above.

What We've All Been Waiting For?
Jul 27th 2013, 16:40, by Liat Kornowski

Welcome back to celebrity week in review!

It was a big week for the royal family across the pond with the highly anticipated birth of the heir to the throne, George Alexander Louis. For obvious reasons and for less-obvious reasons (the baby's gender was never revealed until the birth), William and Kate Middleton's baby boy was the most watched newborn in the world.

Just south of there, Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem welcomed a baby girl in Madrid, Spain. Her name is unknown as of yet. Back Stateside, Jimmy Fallon and his wife Nancy Juvonen surprised everyone when they became first time parents to baby girl Winnie Rose, as no one knew they were expecting.

Amanda Bynes made headlines when she lit a small, gasoline fueled campfire in a residential driveway and was involuntarily hospitalized. After the mandatory 72 hours, Bynes' parents managed to get an extension on her 5150 hold and the troubled star will remain in a medical center for evaluation for two weeks. They did not, however, manage to get the conservatorship they attempted to obtain, as a judge ruled more information will come to light in the upcoming days for him to make a decision.

The cast and crew of "Glee" gathered for a memorial to honor Cory Monteith this week, after the actor shockingly died the week before from a toxic mix of heroin and alcohol. "Ryan Murphy and Lea Michele gathered the cast, crew and producers of 'Glee,' along with colleagues from the network and studio, to share memories and music in an emotional celebration of the life of Cory Monteith," 20th Century Fox said in a statement.

Both Miley Cyrus and Lady Gaga stole the spotlight when they each, separately, posed completely nude: The former for Marc Jacobs T-shirts geared towards= a good cause; and the latter for a photo shoot in V Magazine.

Scarlett Johansson didn't look anything like her glammed up, red carpet self at LAX Wednesday -- and we mean that in the best way possible.

The actress opted for casual in skin tight black jeans, sneakers, a sweatshirt and a cap, but looked every bit as gorgeous as we know her to be.

Johansson, 28, recently fended off rumors that she's engaged to boyfriend Romain Dauriac after being spotted with significant bling on her ring finger.

Hillary Clinton Gets An NBC Show
Jul 27th 2013, 17:10, by The Huffington Post

Six new programs are headed to NBC, and each sounds more exciting than the last.

At the Television Critics Association summer press tour on Saturday, the network announced that it would air a four hour miniseries based on the life of Hillary Clinton (starring Diane Lane) and will be reviving the classic horror film "Rosemary's Baby" in coming months as part of a major move into miniseries and other event-based programming.

In addition to the previously announced news that that a sequel to Mark Burnett's "The Bible"
is headed to the network, NBC chairman Robert Greenblatt also said that the network has committed to n event series based on Stephen King's "Tommyknockers," a limited series from Mark Burnett tentatively called "Plymouth," about the landing of the pilgrims at Plymouth Rock, an adaptation of the life of Cleopatra and a live broadcast of a new version of "The Sound of Music," set to air in December.

"We need to be in the event business," Greenblatt said.

Part of that strategy, he explained, involves reality shows like "The Voice" and "America's Got Talent," sports, the Olympics, awards shows and a new fall game show called "Million Second Quiz."

But the executives' vision also involves scripted shows: Michael J. Fox coming back to the network with a self-titled comedy, "The Michael J. Fox show," is also "an event for us," Greenblatt said.

Gaga Strips In Artwork For New Single
Jul 27th 2013, 17:42, by The Huffington Post

Lady Gaga is working hard to drum up excitement for her new material after months out of the spotlight. The singer's latest move finds her unveiling the artwork for her new single, which will serve as the first release from the upcoming album "ARTPOP."

Gaga tweeted the image, which features her sitting nude on a very technological chair:

The singer will debut the song Aug. 25 during a performance on the MTV Video Music Awards. In the meantime, much speculation is being tossed about in regard to what Gaga's comeback will have in store. Tara Savelo, the "Born This Way" star's makeup artist, recently took to her Little Monsters site to post a photo entitled "Applause," sparking questions as to whether that will be the title of the song.
