Toronto: Sands Shift In 'Queen Of The Desert;' Nicole Kidman Eyed To Replace Naomi Watts As Gertrude Bell

EXCLUSIVE: Looks like director Werner Herzog is going to get a new Queen Of The Desert. I’m hearing that Naomi Watts is exiting the film about the early 20th Century explorer Gertrude Bell, and that Nicole Kidman is in talks to take the plum role. This follows a switch of the male leads earlier this year, when Jude Law departed and James Franco replaced him. Bell is the explorer, writer, archeologist and attaché for the British Empire, who is credited with helping to catalyze the formation of the Middle East at the dawn of the 20th century. The story plays with the sweep of Lawrence Of Arabia, potentially.

Nick Raslan is producing through his Palmyra Films banner along with Cassian Elwes and Michael Benaroya. Benaroya's Benaroya Pictures banner will finance the film. Sierra/Affinity will handle international sales.

Kidman is here in Toronto where her new movie The Railway Man premiered Friday evening. That Jonathan Teplitzky-directed film, about a brutalized WWII POW who gets to confront his Japanese torturer, is considered a prime acquisition title here in the festival here. Kidman is repped by CAA and Media Talent Group.

[TIFF '13 Review] Mike Pereira Says Alex Aja's 'Horns' Goes For the Knockout!
Sep 8th 2013, 03:02, by MrDisgusting

Celebrating his tenth year in covering the Toronto International Film Festival for Bloody Disgusting, it feels a bit like fate that Mike Pereira is writing about Alex Aja’s newest genre flick, Horns, which stars Daniel Radcliffe as a young man who awakens to strange horns sprouting from his temples. Ten years ago, Mike was one of the first ever to attend a film festival and write about it on the Web – he personally helped Bloody Disgusting become the largest horror website in the world. His first review ever? How about Alex Aja’s breakthrough French slasher Haute Tension? Talk about full circle…

In his review of Horns, Mike explains that Aja doesn’t throw jabs, he goes straight for the knockout punch: “I always feel unsettled and untrusting in Aja because of his tendency to hit the viewer hard without a hint of notice. That tension is present all throughout Horns,” he writes. “When the violence explodes, you'll no doubt react. KNB EFX has done yet another first-rate job especially with Ig's ever-changing make-up. The ambitious CGI work is also very impressive.

With Horns, Aja has shown his greatest leap as a filmmaker thus far,” he adds. “Horns is an audacious, wonderfully twisted romantic horror fantasy. It's unlike anything you've ever seen and probably will see from the genre in some time.

Oscar Beat TIFF 2013: Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto Impress in DALLAS BUYERS CLUB
Sep 8th 2013, 02:38, by Adam Chitwood

We're only a few days into the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival but it's already shaping up to be a great year performance-wise.  Chiwetel Ejiofor is phenomenal in 12 Years a Slave and will likely be a serious contender in the Best Actor Oscar race, but the long-in-development AIDS drama Dallas Buyers Club had its world premiere earlier today and not only did Matthew McConaughey deliver in the lead role, but Jared Leto surprised with a truly stellar performance. Hit the jump for my rundown of the Oscar prospects for Dallas Buyers Club in this special TIFF edition of Oscar Beat. Based on a true story, the film centers on Ron Woodruff (McConaughey), a Texas electrician who, after being diagnosed with AIDS in 1986, began to smuggle alternative and illegal treatments into the US and into the hands of other patients.  Dallas Buyers Club has been a passion project for McConaughey for years, and he dropped a considerable amount of weight to finally bring Woodroof's story to the screen.  The film itself is a fascinating look at the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s and 1990s that chronicles the era from a different point of view. By taking place in Texas and telling the story of Woodroof—a heterosexual "man's man" by all accounts—Dallas Buyers Club gives us a look into the epidemic from the perspective of someone who feels angered, ashamed, and embarrassed to be roped in with the homosexual community.  It's an interesting way to examine the AIDS crisis, and director Jean-Marc Vallee smartly ...

TIFF 2013 Review: BREAK LOOSE Doesn't Quite Hold Together
Sep 8th 2013, 03:30

All the ingredients are here for a fine thriller - political discord, corrupt cops, ruthless proto-oligarchs, and car chases, all set against the backdrop of the waning years of Yeltsin, and the massive social and political change that would take place under Putin ushering Russia into the new Millennium.Alas, despite its slick facade and moments of overly choreographed brutality, one's left after Alexey Uchitel's Break Loose simply wanting more - wanting more believable interactions between our characters, more believable consequences for some of the actions, and simply more excitement. This group of Special Police that have a beef with a local developer, tied to a passionate betrayal of love, should provide enough spice to keep things interesting, but even with a brisk running time things seem...

Hello ladies and gentlemen, Muldoon here with this week's lovely selection of shorts for your viewing pleasures. I've had quite the bizarre Saturday myself (waking up in Galveston and now touching this up in Austin), so like you - I'm feeling like some fun shorts are in order. Fortunately, that's exactly what I've got planned, an assortment of unique and enjoyable films made by folks like you and me. Feeling like something animated? Bam! How about some horror? Double Bam! But hey, everything's mixed up here, so give each film a shot and leave your expectations at the door. Come along and ride the filmic pony of cinema: sit back, relax, and just go with the flow. (Luckily however, your computer screen is your screening room of the night, so if something really doesn't seem to work for you, you're in control and you can always tap out. But seriously, you're going to find something that rocks your world here today.) So enough jibber jabber semantics, let's get down to watching some quality shorts, eh?
Go grab yourself some popcorn, lock your kids in a closet, kill the lights, relax and check out this little weekly film fest we've got ourselves here:

SLEEP WALK

TIFF 2013 Review: SEX, DRUGS & TAXATION Is A Gonzo Biopic So Strange It Has To be True
Sep 8th 2013, 03:00

Just as you are unlikely to ever come across a more unlikely friendship than that which blossomed between browbeaten tax lawyer Mogens Glistrup and hedonist playboy Simon Spies through the 1960s in Denmark, you are equally unlikely to settle on a more unlikely filmmaker than Christoffer Boe to tell their story. Best known for serious fare that treads the line between arthouse and genre film while toying with ideas of love, memory and obsession, Boe here tackles a real life story of sex, drugs and discount airlines and the results are utterly compelling.Nicolas Bro (Adam's Apples) plays Mogens Glistrup, an intelligent but intensely socially awkward tax lawyer desperate to escape from the shadow of his overbearing father in law when he encounters his old school...
