Fall movie season is upon us, which means that things are getting serious. The character pieces and adult dramas are finally coming out of the art houses and will soon be flooding the multiplexes as well, as various prestige pictures jockey for end-of-the-year critics lists and awards consideration. With that in mind, a whole slew of new photos have been unleashed for some of these prestige pics (many of them made our fall preview, and our Toronto International Film Festival preview too)—and guess what? We've got them for your scrolling pleasure.
The first photo is from Scott Cooper's follow-up to "Crazy Heart," the crime drama "Out of the Furnace" (out on November 27th in limited release and December 6th everywhere else), starring Christian Bale, Casey Affleck, Woody Harrelson, Zoe Saldana and Willem Dafoe. Both visually and thematically it looks like a much larger, more complicated affair, and we're optimistic that Cooper can pull it off.
The next photo is from Bill Condon's WikiLeaks movie "The Fifth Estate." We've seen the movie but aren't allowed to talk about it yet (look for our Toronto review soon). In the film (and photo), Benedict Cumberbatch plays WikiLeaks mastermind Julian Assange, while Daniel Bruhl portrays Daniel Domscheit-Berg, one of Assange's most trusted confederates. It opens on October 18th.
Next up are single photos from J.C. Chandor's man-versus-nature thriller "All Is Lost" starring Robert Redford and a whole bunch of water (check out our review from Cannes here), and Jason Reitman's domestic crime drama "Labor Day" (check out our review from Telluride here) starring Kate Winslet and an even-scummier-than-normal Josh Brolin. "All Is Lost" is out on October 25th, while "Labor Day" debuts in limited release on Christmas Day.
Three new photos make their debut from "Dallas Buyers Club," the upcoming drama starring Matthew McConaughey (continuing on his streak of honky tonk excellence) as a man given 30 days to live who refuses to go down without a fight. The three photos could have been ripped from any section of the film's evocative trailer, which is okay by us. The movie (co-starring Jared Leto, Jennifer Garner, Steve Zahn, Denis O'Hare and Griffin Dunne) opens on November 1st.
Photos from David O. Russell's "American Hustle," Jason Reitman's "Labor Day" and more on Page 2. A single "American Hustle" photo graces the collection, but it's such a cute and sexy photo (of co-star Jennifer Lawrence) that it seems like it should be like the Farrah Fawcett posters everyone had hanging in their dorm rooms in the '70s. The David O. Russell-directed period epic co-stars Christian Bale (again), Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Louis C.K. and Robert De Niro. It hustles into theaters in limited release on December 13th and everyone on Christmas Day. Do the hustle! And yes, it's in our Fall Film preview.
Next up a sole photo of Jason Reitman's "Labor Day." An adaptation of Joyce Maynard's book of the same name, the movie stars Kate Winslet, Josh Brolin and 14-year-old Gattlin Griffith (Clint Eastwood's "Changeling") in a story about a depressed single and her son Henry who offer a wounded, fearsome man a ride, only later to discover he's an escaped convict wanted by the police in town-wide manhunt. Stockholm syndrome, baby. The movie also co-stars Clark Gregg, James Van Der Beek and in a small cameo, Tobey Maguire. The film screened in Telluride already, but reviews were a little bit mixed (you can read ours here). "Labor Day" opens December 25th in limited release.
Not to be outdone are the five photos from Paul Greengrass' upcoming based-on-a-true-story adventure "Captain Phillips." The film, written by Billy Ray and produced by Scott Rudin, stars Tom Hanks as Captain Phillips, a man whose vessel was boarded by dangerous Somali pirates. The movie will have its premiere at the New York Film Festival before opening on October 11th. We are very, very excited.
Here we have four photos from provocative French filmmaker Catherine Breillat's "Abuse of Weakness," based on a book by Breillat and starring Isabelle Huppert. The film sounds super weird (it's about a stroke-afflicted filmmaker who is conned by a notorious criminal) and it plays at the Toronto International Film Festival this month as well as the New York Film Festival. It doesn't have a domestic release date yet and probably won't for a little while, unless the response is ecstatic at TIFF and NYFF.
Last but not least is a new photo from "Therese," which debuts at TIFF week and stars Elizabeth Olsen, Oscar Isaac, Tom Felton and Jessica Lange. It's based on Emile Zola's novel "Therese Raquin," and is the feature debut of writer/director Charlie Stratton.
