Check Out 4 Alternate & Unused Posters For Spike Lee's 'Oldboy'
Jun 8th 2013, 18:46

For every movie poster, there are usually a half dozen discarded ideas that we never see. But sometimes, those outcast ideas weren't so bad. Movie marketing is usually a dryly straightforward process, and generally, studios prefer a direct and clear (and usually boring) approach over anything creative, enigmatic or that might possibly make an audience have to think. That being said, the first teaser poster for Spike Lee's "Oldboy" remake was both direct and mysterious, with folks familiar with the original knowing exactly what it was referencing, while newcomers were left to puzzle it out, with an intriguing one sheet. But in a different world, the following posters could have been our first impression of the film. Artist Juan Luis Garcia has dropped four "key art explorations" he put together for the movie, and they are mostly pretty striking stuff. Our guess is that perhaps they were a bit too violent to be utilized, and/or didn't quite match the tone of the finished film,...

When I last visited Oscar Wilde‘s grave at Pere LaChaise cemetery in ’08 or ’09, his tombstone was covered with dozens (hundreds?) of lipstick kisses. It was a vibrant tribute — an organic, obviously emotional demonstration of fan love. Except Wilde’s heirs and some stuffed-shirt Irish thought the ksses were disrespectful, and so they got together with the French and had them washed off and then had a glass wall erected in front of Wilde’s tomb so no one could plant any more.

Wilde’s tomb in 2010 or 2011, or at least before the scrubbing and the Wilde wall.

The way Wilde’s tomb looked today…revolting.

The combination of the missing kisses and the new glass wall is disgusting — the equivalent of some grotesque old biddy buying a brand-new couch for her living room and then covering it with clear plastic so it won’t pick up any stains. Wilde’s tomb used to be the coolest in the whole cemetery — now it’s the most soul-less and antiseptic. Wilde would be appalled. The irish who did this have broomsticks up their arses. They don’t get their ancestor at all.

Rihanna, Emma Watson & Michael Cera Center In New 'This Is the End' Photos; Plus New Clip
Jun 8th 2013, 18:24

The end is nigh. To think it all started in 2007 as "Jay And Seth Versus The Apocalypse" a short YouTube clip starring Seth Rogen and Jay Baruchel as themselves if they were degenerate roommates living in squalor during the apocalypse. This of course evolved into what's now known as "This Is The End," an ensemble apocalypse comedy that's expanded to also include friends-playing-themselves like James Franco, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride and Craig Robinson. And the premise is much the same, it's friends trapped during the apocalypse, only this time they're stuck at James Franco's house after a massive party. The official synopsis: The comedy 'This Is The End' follows six friends trapped in a house after a series of strange and catastrophic events devastate Los Angeles. As the world unravels outside, dwindling supplies and cabin fever threaten to tear apart the friendships inside. Eventually, they are forced to leave the house, facing their fate and the true meaning of friendship...

Bloody Disgusting: Indie Horror ‘Our Darker Purpose’ Looks Frightening

Indie Horror 'Our Darker Purpose' Looks Frightening
Jun 8th 2013, 17:51

Boston based indie developer Avidly Wild Games is working on a game that brings together The Binding of Isaac and Diablo, with a Tim Burton-esque art style. It looks incredible, even though I’m already positive it’ll be one of those games I never finish. I’ve been playing survival horror games my whole life, so I can appreciate a difficult game, but this one looks particularly unforgiving. With that said, I’ll totally still sink countless hours into it, as I’ve done with Dark Souls, FTL and The Binding of Isaac — all fantastic games I’ve never finished.

Its art style is reminiscent of Don’t Starve, and its setting — an intensely creepy Gothic orphanage — is the kind of location I wouldn’t mind exploring more often in horror games. Read on to see it in action.

If Our Darker Purpose sounds like a game you might be interested in, you can help it get distribution on Steam Greenlight, and if you’re feeling extra generous you can support its Kickstarter campaign.

'State Of Decay' Sells 250,000 Copies In First 48 Hours
Jun 8th 2013, 17:27

Undead Labs’ post-apocalyptic XBLA title State of Decay, which released on June 5th, has already sold over a quarter of a million copies. On their blog, the developer thanked their fans, saying “This was you. We did not have an ad budget. We didn't have a physical copy to load onto shelves, no worldwide multimedia push, no studio reputation with millions of followers. All we had was what we believed was a great game and a great community. And make no mistake, a solid game is not enough, not in 2013. Plenty of great games wither away in obscurity. This train got rolling because you got out and pushed.”

This success is well deserved, and it’s especially good news as it all-but-confirms that Undead Labs will bring us the mysterious game they hinted at back when State of Decay was known as Class3, the more ambitious follow-up title known as Class4.

Love him or hate him, Kanye West still knows how to stoke national conversation. In honor of Kanye's birthday, HuffPost Celebrity has created a mashup of the rapper's best sound bites -- because who else has the ability to become an instant meme (after Taylor Swift-gate), sell millions of records (and be a critic's darling), and offend not one, but two presidents (George W. 16 of Joan Rivers' Funniest Fashion Disses
Jun 8th 2013, 13:03

No one dishes it out quite like Joan Rivers. The fiery Fashion Policewoman is always willing to express her opinion, whether you wanted to hear it or not.

Rivers may court controversy with her offensive opinions, but there's something to be said about the TV personality's commitment to her comments. Joan is a woman who doesn't back down from her beliefs, and even her costars aren't safe from the fashion commentator's razor-sharp tongue.

In honor of Joan's 80th birthday (!) on June 8, we've compiled the pithiest style insults and advice attributed to the comic. Now, we can't wait to hear the zingers she comes up with as a Wife Swapper...

"My husband wanted to be cremated. I told him I'd scatter his ashes at Neiman Marcus - that way, I'd visit him every day."

"You know you're getting old when you buy a sexy sheer nightgown and don't know anyone who can see through it."

"I said to my husband, my boobs have gone, my stomach's gone, say something nice about my legs. He said, 'Blue goes with everything.'"

"I hate thin people; 'Oh, does the tampon make me look fat?'"

"The fashion magazines are suggesting that women wear clothes that are 'age appropriate.' For me that would be a shroud."

"Does fashion matter? Always -- though not quite as much after death."

"[Her] face has been tucked in more times than a bedsheet at the Holiday Inn."

"I've had so much plastic surgery, when I die they will donate my body to Tupperware."

"I was so flat I used to put Xs on my chest and write, 'You are here.' I wore Angora sweaters just so the guys would have something to pet."

"Diets, like clothes, should be tailored to you."

"I think I'm in a business where you have to look good, and it's totally youth-oriented."

"Grandchildren can be so f***ing annoying. How many times can you go, 'And the cow goes moo and the pig goes oink'? It's like talking to a supermodel."

"I wish I had a twin, so I could know what I'd look like without plastic surgery."

"The only time a woman has a true orgasm is when she is shopping."

'Cuckoo's Nest' Doctor Dies
Jun 8th 2013, 12:58

GRANTS PASS, Ore. -- The psychiatrist who opened the Oregon State Hospital's doors to filming of the 1975 Academy Award-winning movie "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" has died.

Dr. Dean Brooks died May 30 at a retirement home in Salem at age 96, family members said. He had been in declining health for several weeks after a fall.

Brooks' daughter Dennie Brooks said Friday the film's producers were turned down by all the other mental hospitals they approached. But her father, who was the Salem hospital's superintendent, saw the value of the movie in starting a national discussion about mental health and the responsibility of institutions to do no harm.

She said Dean Brooks also thought being part of a movie would be fun for him and for patients. He ended up playing a small role in the film – which was based on a 1962 Ken Kesey novel and starred Jack Nicholson – and making sure patients were involved, too.

Allowing the movie inside the hospital was a big career risk, but Dean Brooks regularly took risks on behalf of the patients, going so far as to take them on mountain-climbing expeditions and teaching them to rappel down cliffs, said Greg Roberts, the Oregon State Hospital's current director.

At the urging of staff, he allowed patients to start wearing regular clothes rather than uniforms long before other state hospitals.

"He would wink at me and say he could do stuff then I could never get away with today," Roberts said. "In my opinion, Dean Brooks literally set the bar on how to be a great state hospital superintendent."

Kesey based the novel on his experiences working at a Veterans Administration hospital while a writing student at Stanford University. But the movie made the story forever part of the history of the Oregon State Hospital, which has since moved to another building.

In the film, the free-spirited Randall McMurphy fakes mental illness to get off a prison farm, only to be defeated by the overwhelming institutional power of the hospital and the domineering Nurse Ratched.

Dean Brooks played Dr. Spivey, a psychiatrist who initially acquiesces to Ratched's power but later is inspired by McMurphy to stand up for himself and the patients.

While the movie gave him a platform to speak out for patients, Brooks had a reputation as an innovator before the film was produced, his daughter said. She cited a patient outing he organized that included whitewater rafting and was featured in Life Magazine.

"He saw Ken Kesey's true message about our capacity and organization's capacity to do harm to one another," Dennie Brooks said. "If he hadn't known that, he would have gone right along with the administration at the time and said, `No, we're not gonna do it (the film).'"

Before giving his approval for the movie, Dean Brooks went to every ward and discussed the idea with patients and staff.

"To make the deal, he insisted primarily that the patients be respected, and the patients actually be involved," said Charles Kifleyak, who made a documentary about the psychiatrist and the filming of "Cuckoo's Nest" called "Completely Cuckoo."

"He felt the film had to benefit the patients in some way, or he was not going to do it," Kifleyak said from Burbank, Calif.

Nearly 90 patients ultimately had parts in the movie, or jobs behind the scenes, said Dennie Brooks, who also worked on the film as a location coordinator.

Though Kesey was unhappy enough with the movie's portrayal of his book to sue its producers, owners and distributors, he "got" Dean Brooks and what he was doing at the hospital, Brooks' daughter said. Kesey eventually won an undisclosed settlement.

The writer visited the hospital while working on a screenplay, which was rejected, and he later penned a handwritten note to Brooks.

"What I thought was the greatest innovation was the eye-level way you deal with the men and women under your care, and the affection that created affection," Kesey wrote.

After the movie, Dean Brooks remained friends with Kesey. They did speaking engagements and visited Disneyworld together, even sharing a hotel room, she said. Dean Brooks also remained friends with actress Louise Fletcher, who played Nurse Ratched.

Born July 22, 1916, in Colony, Kan., Dean Brooks put himself through medical school at the University of Kansas playing trombone in dance bands, his daughter said. There he met his wife, Ulista Jean Moser, a nursing student. She died in 2006 after 65 years of marriage.

Brooks went into the U.S. Navy in 1943 and served as a triage officer on ships taking part in the invasions of several islands in the South Pacific, including Iwo Jima, his daughter said.

After the war, while Dean Brooks served at a military hospital outside Medford, Ore., his commanding officer counseled him to become a psychiatrist.

Dean Brooks also worked at a Tacoma, Wash., VA hospital before joining the Oregon State Hospital staff in 1947 as a psychiatrist. He became superintendent in 1955.

After he retired in 1981, Dean Brooks moved to Everett, Wash., to be close to his grandchildren. He continued to advocate for the mentally ill, founding the Dorothea Dix Think Tank to decriminalize mental illness and find better ways of treating patients.

Besides Dennie Brooks, he is survived by two daughters, Ulista Jean Brooks and India Brooks Civey; a brother, Robert; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

WATCH: Why Catholic-Raised Susan Sarandon Says Religion 'Didn't Make Sense'
Jun 8th 2013, 13:04

Susan Sarandon, the oldest of nine children, was raised Catholic and attended Catholic grammar school as a child. Though she grew up with faith, Sarandon says that even as a child, she had many questions about religion -- questions that got her into trouble and ultimately make her rethink her relationship with religion as an adult.

In this video from "Oprah's Master Class," Sarandon explains exactly which Catholic teachings she never understood and shares what happened when she asked innocent questions to better understand her religion.

"I was a very quiet kid, a very wanting-to-please kid," Sarandon says. "But certain things didn't make sense to me and when I questioned [it], there was a problem."

One of the first religious teachings Sarandon questioned was the rule that marriage must take place in the Catholic Church. "I asked how Joseph and Mary were married, since Jesus didn't make it up until later," Sarandon recalls. "[As punishment], I had to go stand in the hallway. That's when the trouble began, when I was in third grade."

Sarandon's questions may have been misconstrued as mischievous, but she insists that all she was looking for were answers that made sense to her. "I was not trying to be a wise-ass," Sarandon says. "I just didn't understand why they would put babies in limbo just because they weren't baptized… Or why they would say every other religion was bad."

Sarandon says that she believes religions each have something valuable to offer. "I think that all religions at their core have some really magnificent teachings, and most of them are very similar," she explains. "It's the institutionalization of these religious principles that don't serve me well."

"Oprah's Master Class" airs Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on OWN.

John Farr: Johnny Depp Turns 50
Jun 8th 2013, 14:27

Tomorrow, the thoroughly original, impossibly talented Johnny Depp hits the milestone age of 50.

Does this mean he's actually middle-aged? No, it can't be.

After all, part of this unique actor's enduring charm is his child-like quality, his willingness to dress up and be silly.

But behind that, there's always been a serious foundation built on focus, grit and ambition. His firm intention from the start was not to rely on his good looks, but use his intelligence, imagination and -- for want of a better word -- fearlessness to become a highly respected actor known for taking chances on wild, idiosyncratic roles.

Those risks have sometimes paid off, sometimes not. But one has to admire the actor who takes them, as long as they are fairly well calculated. His have been.

Life did not start out smoothly for him. Born in Kentucky, the youngest of four kids, his childhood was unsettled and peripatetic. Partly as a result, Johnny was a sensitive, somewhat solitary, often troubled child. An indifferent student, he dropped out of high school a year after his parents divorced. He was 15.

He'd obviously heard The Byrds sing "So You Wanna Be a Rock'n'Roll Star?" because that became his immediate goal. And he and his band actually made some headway, but as so often happens, split up before signing a record deal.

In early '80s Hollywood, through his then-wife (make-up artist Lori-Anne Allison), Johnny met Nic Cage, who told him he should act. His striking good looks must have helped, but again, there was more to it. He was a natural.

First Depp got noticed in two featured roles in hit movies: 1984's A Nightmare On Elm Street and 1986's Platoon. Next came TV stardom and teen heartthrob status on 1987's 21 Jump Street.

And then the Gods really smiled on him. Johnny met Tim Burton. Over time, their shared off-the-wall sensibility would help shape the actor's distinctive screen persona. Johnny would start out as Burton's muse, and branch out from there. But then he would often return to where he started.

Before Johnny experienced serious blockbuster status with the endless Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise, he was often referred to as an actor who made weird films that made no money. Depp countered that the studios did not understand the material he chose, or know how to market it. He also affirmed that he picked roles and films that intrigued him, regardless of box-office potential.

This is the Johnny Depp I like and respect, which begs the question: what keeps him coming back to play Jack Sparrow? (Tell me it's not just the green stuff.)

And though I also admire his willingness and ability to go gleefully over-the-top, my own Depp short list is comprised of Johnny's quieter, subtler outings.

(For instance, though many will disagree, I felt he was off in Terry Gilliam's frenetic, outsize Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas- more like a jazzed-up cartoon character out of Who Framed Roger Rabbit than his rough, raw, profane real-life friend, "gonzo" journalist Hunter Thompson.)

Fifty years old is yesterday's forty. Johnny Depp has a lot more to do, and he is only getting better with time. Perhaps after this next "Pirates" outing, he might choose to hang up his trusty sword, and return to smaller, smarter films like the ones listed below.

Here's hoping. In the meantime, happy birthday, Johnny- and thanks for the memories.

Edward Scissorhands (1990)- In Tim Burton's melancholy parable about conformity and the pain of being different, Johnny plays the creation of an inventor who dies too soon. Instead of hands, this gentle creature gets fitted with sharp blades. Under these conditions, can misfit Edward ever find love and happiness?

What's Eating Gilbert Grape? (1993)- Johnny is title character Gilbert, a fatherless young man who presides over a highly dysfunctional family. Then finally he gets a shot at love and happiness. Will he take it? Look for a winning early turn by child actor Leonardo di Caprio in this sweet, touching, original film from Lasse Hallstrom.

Ed Wood (1994)- Reteamed with Tim Burton, Depp feels made for the role of the grade Z filmmaker who brought us, among other campy dreck, the immortally bad Plan 9 From Outer Space. Martin Landau won an Oscar for his portrayal of Bela Lugosi.

Donnie Brasco (1997)- Johnny plays an undercover cop assigned to penetrate the local mob who does so by befriending a low-level hood. Based on a true story, this paired Depp with Al Pacino. Feeding off each other, both actors are superlative.

Finding Neverland (2004)- Johnny portrays "Peter Pan" author J.M Barrie with subtlety and finesse in this charming period picture, and got an Oscar nod for it. Co-star Kate Winslet is luminous as well. (In future, he should take more roles like this one- assuming any ever come up again!)

Regina Weinreich: Morton Downey Jr.'s American Tragedy
Jun 8th 2013, 15:52

In his time, the late '80's, Morton Downy, Jr. was the hottest voice on television, loud and abrasive. For nearly two years, he brow beat and brawled his way to top ratings, ultimately alienating top tier guests, until his talk show devolved into something of a circus act, showcasing strippers and carnies, a precursor to Jerry Springer, and the in your face television of today. At the Paley Center on Wednesday night, television and media personalities: Donny Deutsch, Rosanna Scotto, Dick Cavett, Joe Conason, Dan Abrams, Peggy Siegal and others gathered for a screening of documentary Evocateur: Morton Downey Jr. As much as everyone knew about this chain smoking loud mouth, the documentary still held many surprises, including his anxiety of influence over his famous dad.

Filmmakers Seth Kramer, Daniel A. Miller, Jeremy Newburger, were kids fascinated by all this tumult, particularly the Tawana Brawley case which Downy got behind, along with a heavy and slick Reverend Al Sharpton who took a few punches himself. Not only was Morton Downy Jr. a champion of the Tawana Brawley case, but he staged his own hoax in an airport men's room claiming skinheads attacked him, chopped his hair and designed swastikas with black sharpies on him. The filmmakers said they knew they had to include that moment. American civil rights attorney Gloria Allred had a sympathetic view of Downy. At the Paley Center reception, she noted how hard it is to be successful in television. Shouldn't he have learned from the Tawana Brawley drama? Ultimately the truth would come out? Downy's story is particularly sad, his speedy downfall, his hybris, his tragic inability to stop even the smoking by which he would die of lung cancer in 2001.
