Box Office: 'Lone Ranger' Eating Minion Dust as 'Despicable Me 2' Eyes $140M
Jul 6th 2013, 15:39, by Todd Cunningham

Things got better for the minions of "Despicable Me 2" and worse for Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer and "The Lone Ranger" on Friday, as the animated sequel took in another $30 million.

That puts it on pace for around $77 million for the weekend, and a $140 million haul for the five-day July 4 weekend, roughly $30 million more than analysts had projected. The $76 million Universal-Illumination Entertainment production also has taken in nearly $94 million from 45 foreign markets through Friday, and will pass $200 million worldwide Saturday

The Word from Egypt: Support Our Second Revolution
Jul 6th 2013, 19:50, by Sharon Waxman

My friends in Egypt are jubilant at the ouster of Mohammed Morsi. But they are dismayed that the United States – the media and the Obama administration – are not more actively embracing what they consider a second revolution and not a military coup.

A Lot Of (Dumb) Names Were Rejected Before Microsoft Settled On The Xbox
Jul 6th 2013, 18:53, by Adam Dodd

Seamus Blackley and his team helped build and launch the original Xbox, way back in 2001. They were also the only reason the Xbox didn’t end up being called the AIO (All In One), MVPC (Microsoft Virtual Play Center), M-PAC (Microsoft Play and Action Center), or FACE (Full Action Center), if you can believe that last one. “Hey man, want to grab some Taco Bell and head back to my place for some FACE time?” Just, no.

It would seem the higher ups were a little acronym happy back then, as dozens of awful names were hurled out, one awful after the next. There was the MTG, or Microsoft Total Gaming (what?), the O2, or Optimal Ozone (you’re kidding, right?), and so many others that sound just as awkward.

Suddenly, “Wii” doesn’t sound so bad.

If you’d like the full list of horrible titles, you can find them on Edge.

Have a question? Feel free to ever-so-gently toss Adam an email, or follow him on Twitter and Bloody Disgusting.

Guillermo Del Toro Wants Benedict Cumberbatch For 'Frankenstein', Charlie Kaufman Writing 'Slaughterhouse-Five'
Jul 6th 2013, 19:34, by Kevin Jagernauth

Okay, so before we dive into this, let's just recap where the forever busy Guillermo Del Toro is at right now. He's got his robots vs. monsters thing "Pacific Rim" hitting theaters this Friday, after which he'll work on the TV adaptation of his novel series "The Strain" for FX through until the end of the year. And then he'll kick off 2014 with his next feature film, the gothic horror "Crimson Peak." But as always, Del Toro has about a half dozen irons in the fire, and he's already looking to reteam with his "Crimson Peak" star Benedict Cumberbatch on another project. Speaking with Daily Telegraph (today's print edition, not yet online), the paper reveals "he is hoping to direct Cumberbatch again in a new film version of 'Frankenstein.' " Exciting stuff, but as fans know, the project has been one Del Toro has been working on for years in fits and starts. Back in 2009, he was reportedly doing test shooting and had selected Doug Jones (who featured as creatures in "Pan's...

The Most Popular Posts Of 2013 So Far
Jul 6th 2013, 19:00, by Mike Masnick

Since this week is a "short week" and many people are on vacation anyway, we decided not to ask anyone to do their "favorite posts of the week." Conveniently, this is also the first weekend after the halfway point of 2013, so I thought it might be fun to see which stories from the first half of the year generated the most traffic.

  1. Redditor Points Out The Flaws In SimCity's Online-Only DRM, Gets Banned By EA For His Troubles: This post got a ton of attention, and resulted in EA claiming that it was all a "glitch" in the system, though not everyone believed that to be the case. EA seems to have a way of doing things that tends to just make everything worse.
  2. Oh Look, Rep. Mike Rogers Wife Stands To Benefit Greatly From CISPA Passing...: This was a big story for a key reason: Rogers has been adamant about getting CISPA passed, but this conflict of interest had been previously undisclosed.
  3. If Your Cable Company Were Honest, This Is What Its Commercial Would Look Like: Note: people do not like their cable companies. They hate them almost as much as they hate EA.
  4. NSA Whistleblower Ed Snowden: From My Desk I Could Wiretap Anyone: You, A Federal Judge Or The President Of The US: You knew at least one NSA surveillance post had to be in this list. This one is still controversial. Some people insist that Snowden was exaggerating or lying, but other released documents suggest that there's support for what he's claiming.
  5. White House Makes It Impossible For The Blind To Sign Petition Supporting Copyright Treaty For The Blind: A bit of a technological faux pas on the part of the White House. Of course, now that the treaty has been signed, we'll see if the US will actually ratify it.
  6. FBI Admits That Obeying The Constitution Just Takes Too Much Time: As we just had the "Restore the 4th" effort, this one seems appropriate to be on the list.
  7. PETA Goes After Assassin's Creed For Its Depiction Of Whaling; Ubisoft Responds With A Heaping Dose Of Sarcasm: Hey look, an article about a big video gaming company, where they're not the ones doing something crazy. Don't get that very often.
  8. NSA: If Your Data Is Encrypted, You Might Be Evil, So We'll Keep It Until We're Sure: Yes, the NSA is collecting your data and assuming the worst.
  9. Don't Let Patents Kill 3D Printing: Hopefully speaks for itself.
  10. Cable Industry Finally Admits That Data Caps Have Nothing To Do With Congestion: What did I say earlier about people hating their cable companies? Yeah, that.
There you go: a nice variety of stories that have been popular over the last six months or so. We'll be working hard to write more stuff you enjoy going forward as well.
