Friday Box Office: IRON MAN 3 Earns $68.1 Million on Opening Day; On Track for Second-Highest Weekend of All Time
May 4th 2013, 15:50

After setting records all around the world with its international roll-out last week, Iron Man 3 has finally arrived in US theatres. The Disney/Marvel sequel took in a reported $68.1 million from its 4,253 locations on Friday, including $15.6 million earned from its Thursday night/midnight screenings. That blows away the $51.2 million debut of Iron Man 2 on this weekend in 2010, though, as expected, it is well short of the $80.8 million earned by 2012's The Avengers. Overall, Iron Man 3 now claims the second-highest May debut of all time and the eighth best single-day opening overall. The current projection for IM3's opening weekend is $169 million - though that number has shifted continuously for the past 24 hours. A couple of million in either direction would not be enough to put the film past The Avengers' record of $207.4 million, of course – though anything over $169.1 million would replace Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 as the second-highest debut weekend of all time at the domestic box office.  Check back tomorrow for the complete Iron Man 3 breakdown.  Title Friday Total 1.  Iron Man 3 $68,132,000 $68.1 2.  Pain & Gain $2,345,000 $28.6 3.  42 $1,790,000 $73.9 4.  Oblivion $1,700,000 $71.8 5.  The Big Wedding $1,200,000 $11.5

Check Out Some Cool Art by Shannon Bonatakis and Kiersten Essenpreis From Their Gallery1988 L.A. Show
May 4th 2013, 16:12

I love discovering new artists.  While it's always great to see the latest work by Martin Ansin or Tyler Stout, walking into a gallery and not being sure what you're going to see is a great feeling...especially when the art is well done.  And that's what happened last night as I walked into the Shannon Bonatakis and Kiersten Essenpreis show at Gallery1988 in Los Angeles.  Last week at the Bad Robot show, Jensen Karp (the man behind Gallery1988) told me I'd want to stop by to see Shannon and Kiersten's work.  He was definitely right. As you can see in the 50 pictures after the jump, the show is loaded with mostly original works that are smart and interesting.  I hate trying to describe why a piece of art works because it's so subjective, but I promise if you check it out, you'll agree that it's worth your time.  In addition, while the show is mostly original's, Essenpreis has 9 screenprints and they're very low runs.  If you see anything you like, I'd advise you to hit the online drop in a few hours before it sells out.  Hit the jump for more. If you're in the L.A. area, I'd definitely stop by and check it out.  Here's the info: Gallery 1988 (East): 7021 Melrose Avenue Los Angeles, CA 90038 East of La Brea Map Hours: Wed - Sun: 11 AM - 6 PM Mon & Tues: Closed Make sure to follow Gallery1988 on Twitter for more info. click on any image for high-res [gallery link="file" order="DESC" columns="1"]

Silver Samurai Stands Tall in New Poster for THE WOLVERINE
May 4th 2013, 16:18

Summer movie season has officially begun with the release of Iron Man 3 this weekend, and now a new poster has landed online for another of this year's superhero pics.  In the latest trailer for The Wolverine, we caught a glimpse of the villain Silver Samurai.  Given the reveal, director James Mangold has now decided to share a Silver Samurai-centric new poster for the film.  It's a really swell piece of art that's in keeping with the Japanese-influenced initial posters for The Wolverine, and I'm interested to see how many more posters like this we'll be getting. Hit the jump to check out the poster.  The film stars Hugh Jackman, Will Yun Lee, Hiroyuki Sanada, Brian Tee, Rila Fukushima, Tao Okamoto and Svetlana Khodchenkova.  The Wolverine opens on July 26th. Via James Mangold's Twitter. As we are beginning to offer glimpses of Silver Samurai, here's a new great one sheet image for #thewolverine   Here's the official synopsis for The Wolverine: Based on the celebrated comic book arc, this epic action-adventure takes Wolverine, the most iconic character of the X-Men universe, to modern day Japan. Out of his depth in an unknown world he faces his ultimate nemesis in a life-or-death battle that will leave him forever changed. Vulnerable for the first time and pushed to his physical and emotional limits, he confronts not only lethal samurai steel but also his inner struggle against his own immortality, emerging more powerful than we have ever seen him before. ABC’s Happy Endings had a little something to smile about this Friday night, as the final two episodes of Season 3 — with 2.7 million total viewers and 0.8 rating and 2.1 mil/0.7 — rose more than 20 percent in both measures versus last week. But again, next-to-worst case, USA Network (maybe, possibly) rides to the rescue.

Continuing ABC’s night, Shark Tank (5.5 mil/1.7) fell 15 percent yet netted Friday’s best demo rating.

Over on CBS, Undercover Boss (7.2 mil/1.2) dropped 21 and 29 percent, the penultimate Vegas (7.3 mil/0.9) ticked down a tenth, and the next-to-last Blue Bloods (9.9 mil/1.3) was flat, copping the night’s biggest audience.

NBC’s Fashion Star (3 mil/0.7) added a few eyeballs… Fox’s Touch (2.22 mil/0.6) was flat… and The CW’s Nikita (1.2 mil/0.3) surged 27 percent in audience but showed no movement in the demo.

"Chow Is A Cancer": Watch The First Clip From 'The Hangover Part III' Plus New Posters
May 4th 2013, 16:09

While plot details (such as they are for this franchise) have been kept secret, director Todd Phillips recently teased the driving force behind "The Hangover Part III" and how it ties into the first movie. "It's very much all one big story of [how that moment when] Alan buys drugs from Black Doug in the first movie basically fucked their lives up for six years," he told THR. But it would appear that the Dougs have once again been potentially mixed up.

Though "nobody wakes up in this movie -- there's no forgotten night," it appears that Doug's life is in danger and the key to saving him is none other than Chow (Ken Jeong), who gets an expanded role this time around. The reason the first "The Hangover" worked so well was both from its energy and the freshness of the premise, so we'll reserve judgment for now on this little clip, except to say that this movie had better bring it.

The Wolf Pack is back on May 25th. Watch the scene below plus take a peek at a handful of new posters too.

Blade, Ghost Rider & Punisher Return To Marvel; Kevin Feige Says Doctor Strange Is "Next Up" For Phase Three
May 4th 2013, 15:52

With "Iron Man 3" set to make, approximately, a kajillion dollars this weekend and Marvel's Phase Two already mapped out, Phase Three is now the focus of their attention. We already know "The Avengers 2" and "Ant-Man" will kick off what will be a banner year for Disney in 2015, but what's next after that? Of course, there's all kinds of speculation and options, particularly with "Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D." giving the comic company the chance to introduce even more characters to the Marvel-verse, and with the rights to even more of their catalog returning it's giving Kevin Feige plenty to play with.

In the recent issue of EW (via ComicBookMovie), it's revealed that Blade, Ghost Rider and Punisher are all back in the Marvel fold and all three have an interesting track record. "Blade" of course spawned a modestly successful trilogy of films, that are probably best remembered for the Wesley Snipes anecdotes they have provided. "Ghost Rider" got off to a great, surprising start for Sony, but the sequel made almost $100 million less worldwide than its predecessor, killing off that potential moneymaker, while "The Punisher" has a cult devoted to the 2004 movie (including Thomas Jane himself who made an unauthorized short film), but has since laid dormant. So, reboots for all? Not so fast.

Feige has already tempered expectations about a potential Daredevil movie, and he's even more candid about these three properties. "Whenever a character comes back to us, it's usually because the other studios don't want to make the movies anymore - and that usually means the [previous] movies may not have been particularly well received," he told EW. "They all have potential, but we're not going to say, 'We got it back - make it!'"

But one character that might finally get up on the big screen is Doctor Strange. Rumors have been kicking around for years, with a script handed in way back in 2011 (though it would probably need to be re-written at this point to reflect the changes in the Marvel-verse). Feige has said the character is part of Phase Three, recent rumors have suggested Justin Theroux may be in line for the part. But all signs point to Doctor Strange finally getting into the movie fold.

"Dr. Strange is something that I talk about often and it's sort of next up for us to dig into and explore.  Our executive producer of 'Iron Man 3,' having done 'Captain America: The First Avenger' and as that was finishing he started working on the bones that would become 'Iron Man 3,' and now that he's finished with 'Iron Man 3,' he's working on the bones that would become 'Doctor Strange.' Now that Iron Man 3 is finished, some of our quote-unquote spare time is going to be devoted to trying to crack 'Strange,' " Feige told Collider.

He added: "As we look past 2015, past 'Avengers 2' and 'Ant-Man,' I think 'Dr. Strange' should be one of the next movies in the years following that."

So there you have it. It's as close to a confirmation one is likely to get from Feige, but all the signposts are there. Thoughts? Opinions? Share 'em below.

Zach Braff Answers The Tough Questions On Why He's Using Kickstarter To Fund His Next Film
May 4th 2013, 15:42

I learned that Zach Braff, who, as you all know, launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise $2 million to shoot an indie feature film, actually contributed to a campaign that I've pushed heavily here on S&A - the Freedom Fighters documentary project about exonerated black men who band together to form a detective agency to investigate cases of other men behind bars, claiming to have been falsely imprisoned.

Not that I'm implying that Zach learned about the project from S&A, but I was glad to see that he'd contributed to the campaign, which, by the way, still needs another $8,000 to reach its goal, with 6 days left.

But not only did Zach contribute, he did so at the highest level - says the filmmaker - which is $5,000!

So, it got me wondering whether the celebrities/entertainers/public personalities who've taken to crowd-funding to raise money for their projects (there haven't been that many that I'm aware of), and have done so with success, have themselves contributed to the campaigns of others - especially those thousands of other indie film campaigns that don't have any celebs/entertainers/public personalities to help sell them, and aren't getting blanket mainstream press coverage.

I hoped Kickstarter had some way for me to find this out, but, alas, there isn't, which makes sense I suppose.

But just a thought...

What I really want to share with you is this new, informative KCRW/Kim Masters interview with Braff, specifically about his Kickstarter campaign. I think it's an especially good interview because she asks him most of the tough questions - question that many of you have posed about celebrities who take to crowdfunding sites to raise money for the film projects. For example, obvious questions like: you're a Hollywood celebrity, so why Kickstarter? And also... but you have rich friends Zach, you have the kind of access that other regular folks don't, so why not exploit all of that? Also... the perks are nice Zach, but some would rather see their contributions act as investments, meaning they'll get to enjoy in the film's eventual financial success, assuming that happens. And also... aren't you invading an already very crowded space Zach, that indies have long felt was theirs? As well as... why not invest your own money, Zach?

And much more...

Through it all, he also gives the listener some insight into how the financing process works for filmmakers at his level, the emphasis on international box office appeal, which we've touched on in recent posts, and more.

One thing he says that I wish she'd asked for further clarification on, is his statement that it's still illegal to *crowd-invest* (my term, not theirs) when she asks him about contributors who would rather invest in the film to see a financial return later, instead of giving money because they just want to see the project made, and are content with whatever perks are offered at their contribution level.

I wasn't clear on all that; maybe someone can explain it to me.

The entire interview is worth a listen on a Saturday morning or afternoon, so check it out below (Zach Braff comes in around the 7:20 mark, if you want to skip ahead. Although the first 7 minutes of the show, on the so-called "new fronts" with regards to the TV space, are worth listening to as well):

Awesome Stuff: Films About Things Techdirt Talks About
May 4th 2013, 16:00

For this week's awesome stuff post, we've got links to movies about things that we regularly talk about here on Techdirt: the prosecution of Aaron Swartz, the CFAA, patents and piracy.

  • First up, is a documentary about Aaron Swartz called The Internet's Own Boy by Brian Knappenberger, who previously did a documentary about Anonymous. Knappenberger's film isn't a "memorial" about Swartz, but rather an "investigative" documentary about his story and the lawsuit against him, as well as the legal structure that led to his arrest and trial. The video that Knappenberger has put together is really compelling and touching:
This project has received a lot of attention, so there's no surprise that it's quite close to its $75,000 target with a few weeks to go. It looks like it should be a great project to support.
  • From once CFAA case to another. Krystof Andres & George Russell are doing a documentary called The Hedgehog & The Hare, all about the CFAA, but mainly focused on the case against Andrew "Weev" Auernheimer. The documentary will also explore how the CFAA goes way too far in trying to criminalize perfectly reasonable computer activities.
The target for this project had much more modest goals than the Swartz one, though the production values definitely look a bit more amateurish. Plus, frankly, the rewards on the Swartz movie are a lot more reasonable. That said, with just a few days left, it looks like this movie is likely to squeak by the target even if it's just slightly under as I write this.
  • This next one, I'm a bit less sure about, but the topic could be interesting. It's supposedly a short film, made in South Africa about the big pharmaceutical makers going after generic drug makers, called The Cure. What makes me a bit unsure about is that the filmmakers, Katey Carson and Errol Schwartz, seem a hell of a lot more excited about the fact that (a) they signed up some "Oscar-winning talent" to be in the film and (b) that they're filming the whole thing with an iPhone, than they are about the story, which they barely mention at all. The topic sounds interesting. I just wish they'd actually have said something about that, rather than the other stuff which really isn't that interesting.
The project has barely raised any money, and they're pretty ambitious to seek $35,000 for this. But since it's an Indiegogo "flex funding" campaign, they'll get the money even if they don't raise the full amount. Also, the "rewards" you get back seem ridiculously high priced. You have to pay $100 just to get a download of the short film and $50 for the script? Hmmm. Love the idea of a film that highlights problems with drug patents, but not sure this is the best way to do it.
  • And, finally, a documentary about piracy. I mean that's what critics insist this site is all about, right? So I figured, why not. Here's a documentary film about a Somali pirate -- you know, one who actually hijacked a ship, called The Smiling Pirate, which aims to tell the story of the one remaining living member of the pirates who hijacked the Maersk Alabama. As the story suggests, despite a forthcoming Tom Hangs movie about this whole thing, there appear to be a lot more questions than answers about what really happened both aboard the ship and then with the captured pirate after the whole thing happened.
Sounds like an interesting story, but it hasn't picked up very many backers yet. It's also an Indiegogo flexible funding project, so will receive any money it raises, but it's not clear if it'll get enough to really support the making of the documentary any time soon.
That's it for this week. Next week we'll be back with more awesome stuff.

Exclusive: See Lawrence Kasdan's Handwritten Screenplay Pages for 'Empire Strikes Back'
May 4th 2013, 16:00

ZZ3E9DD337

This week I talked to the great people at the Writers Guild Foundation Archive about giving us access to something unprecedented from Star Wars history. Screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan donated his original handwritten first draft of The Empire Strikes Back. The WGA West archive has the only copy in existence, other than the original, in addition to later drafts with notes by Kasdan himself. After the jump you’ll see a series of pages that the WGA West has given us exclusive access to premiere in celebration of the “May the Fourth” celebration. So enjoy, and may the fourth be with you!

On one of the pages below you will see Kasdan’s original handwritten screenplay page featuring Yoda talking to Luke. We have also been given a complimentary page from the first draft of the printed screenplay with Kasdan’s handwritten notes “Figure out a speech pattern for Yoda”.

We have also been given Lawrence’s original handwritten page for the Leia / Han “I love you” scene, which of course features different dialogue (Harrison Ford famously came up with the classic “I know” on set while they were shooting the scene.)

And lastly, we have the original handwritten version of “I thought they smelled bad on the outside.”
