Am I the only one disappointed by Touch ID on the new iPhone 5S? Apparently not. My own experience has been that it worked great the first day after I got the phone and almost not at all since. So I feel a little like I've been duped into actually using a passcode (which I never did before) so that I could use this cool new feature (score one for the added security benefits of touch ID!) But then it stopped working. So after five tries (or before) I punch in my passcode. I do that a lot.

Disney Releases First Look at 'Avatar' Theme Park (Photos)
Oct 13th 2013, 03:44, by Jethro Nededog

Disney released the first look images at its upcoming “Avatar” theme park dubbed “Pandora,” which is slated to open in Orlando, Fla. at the Animal Kingdom park at Walt Disney World Resort in early-2017.

“From the moment ‘Avatar’ was released, people were captivated by the mythical world of Pandora,” Walt Disney Parks and Resorts chairman Tom Staggs wrote on the department’s blog.

“When we announced that we'd be working with ['Avatar' director] James Cameron and Lightstorm Entertainment to bring this world to life in our parks, we felt certain that this partnership and combination of talent and imagination would produce an experience unlike any other ever created,” he continued.

The four art concept images, first released at the D23 Expo in Japan on Friday, show the park during the day, night, its planned live performances and a sky-high view from the movie’s bird-like flying predators, the Banshees, one of the park’s planned rides.

“As these concept renderings show in epic scale, in the world of ‘Avatar’ guests will encounter awe-inspiring floating mountains and wander through a nighttime jungle of bioluminescent plants that are alive with light and sound. Guests will also discover what it feels like to soar into the sky riding a Banshee,” said Staggs.

Beatles Director Richard Lester To Receive Career Achievement Award from L.A. Film Critics
Oct 13th 2013, 04:10, by Steve Pond

British director Richard Lester has been named the recipient of the 2014 Career Achievement Award by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.

Lester, 81, is best known for the two films he made with the Beatles, 1964's "A Hard Day's Night" and 1965's "Help!" His movies of the '60s and '70s, many of them humorous and hyperkinetic, also included "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum," "Petulia" and "The Three Musketeers."

The Beatles' films not only shocked many who thought that rock 'n' roll movies were disposable trash, they helped the band cement its central place in pop culture and inspired much of what would follow, from "The Monkees" TV series to rock videos on MTV 20 years later.

In 1984, MTV gave him an award and called him "the father of the music video."

In the 1980s, Lester directed two Superman movies, "Superman II" (the subject of controversy when Lester took over from original director Richard Donner) and "Superman III."  He has not directed a film since 1991, when he made the Paul McCartney concert movie "Get Back."

The award will be presented to Lester at LAFCA's annual awards ceremony on Jan. 11 at the Intercontinental Hotel in Century City. Previous recipients of the honor include Paul Mazursky, Sidney Lumet, Frederick Wiseman, Doris Day and Jerry Lewis.

The Los Angeles Film Critics Association consists of 59 L.A. based critics, including theWrap’s Alonso Duralde.

Review: Phoenix and Johansson make magic in 'Her'
Oct 13th 2013, 03:29

Her_review_photo_gallerySpike Jonze may be known as a bit of a merry prankster, but he also is known for bringing real sincerity and heartbreak to his feature films. That's certainly true of 'Her,' an unconventional romance between Scarlett Johansson and Joaquin Phoenix that is one of the year's most affecting films.
