Lady Gaga on 'SNL': Madonna Bad Covers Sketch, 'Cheap' Applause and Self-Deprecating Jokes (Video)
Nov 17th 2013, 09:22, by Mekeisha Madden

Lady Gaga is not afraid to pander to audiences for applause.

In fact, the 27-year-old New York native even sang about it when she pulled double duty as the host and musical guest on “Saturday Night Live” this week.

Dressed in a sparkly chorus-girl inspired mini, Gaga changed the lyrics to her chart-topper “Applause” and instead belted out a jazzy version of “Cheap Applause.” Proving her point further, Gaga asked the audience to clap for the ladies, out-of-towners, ending childhood obesity, teachers, New York firefighters and subway perverts.

Gaga didn’t appear in the show’s cold open which featured Bobby Moynihan, Taran Killam and Kate McKinnon in a funny parody of Toronto Mayor Rob Ford and “60 Minutes” correspondent Lara Logan. While the pop singer’s intro proved cheeky and cute — it wasn’t the songstress’ best punchline.

That came later in two different sketches. First, Gaga poked fun at her infamous fashion risks when she played an Apple store genius in a Kanye West and Kim Kardashian sketch.

“I don’t care about fashion,” said a nerdy Gaga, arching her eyebrows at the camera for dramatic effect. “I think people who try too hard with their outfits are maybe hiding something.”

Embracing the self-mockery vibe, Gaga further ribbed herself for the undeniable similarities between her “Born This Way” and Madonna’s “Express Yourself” in a bad covers sketch.

Sadly, Gaga’s humor and self-deprecation died after the “Born This Way” nod and she was wasted in the second half of the show — Gaga as a stage mom, Gaga as a child actress, Gaga as an elderly Gaga — much the way writers have wasted previous hosts in the second hour this season (see Kerry Washington, Tina Fey and Edward Norton).

That is unless you count Gaga’s “Do What You Want” duet with R. Kelly, which was hilarious but it’s unclear if that was intentional or not. The number included a woman whose sole purpose it was to take Kelly’s sunglasses and a dry-hump sexual simulation/push-ups number between Gaga and Kelly that was nothing short of silly.

The night’s best spoofs, such as second-term strength Paxil for President Barack Obama and the cold open, didn’t involve Gaga at all. But that’s not Gaga’s fault. She, like “Scandal” star Washington before her, did the best she could with what she was given. Too bad she wasn’t given more. Like wouldn’t it have been great if Gaga would’ve given her new found enemy Perez Hilton his comeuppance? Hilton sure didn’t waste the chance to get in a dig on Twitter while the show aired on the east coast.

Instead, Gaga had to do all the heavy lifting with her voice and boy, did she sound great.

Showtime says of "A Red Wheelbarrow":
After new information comes to light, Carrie and Quinn pursue a key suspect in the Langley bombing. Saul deals with political backlash while Fara discovers the toll an intelligence job can take.
What is Showtime not telling us? Tonight's "Homeland" is another that does not depict Brody's family (so we still don't learn how daughter Dana is adjusting to her new name and her new house). It opens with Saul making breakfast for his unfaithful wife, 90 minutes before he's due at the White House to confront his replacement, and ends with Saul making another of the biggest moves of his career. We'll learn a lot about Headscarf Girl Fara, who will call in sick. And things don't go great for pregnant Carrie.
HBO says of "Havre De Grace":
Nucky takes inventory after being warned of a skunk in his cellar. On the lam following a close call, Chalky and Daughter take refuge outside Wilmington with Oscar Boneau, his mentor from years ago. Gillian considers selling her mansion and starting a new life with Roy Phillips.
Showtime says of "Love and Marriage":
Masters and Johnson enlist outside help. Scully battles his sexual desires.

Premiering tonight:
Almost Human (8pm Fox)
Drama Queen (11pm E!)
Freaks of Nature (10pm Weather)
On The Rocks (10pm Food)

"Revenge" hit a 1.3 last Sunday. ABC cancelled everything that couldn't stay at 1.4 or better last season.
"American Dad," moving to TBS next

Hercules Says Bad Robot's ALMOST HUMAN Is A Pretty Bad Robot Pilot!!

I am – Hercules!!
Somehow J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot production concern ("Alcatraz," "Person of Interest," "Revolution") has come up with one of the least entertaining TV robots in the history of TV robots.
Adding to our disappointment is the fact that "Almost Human" was created by J.H. Wyman, longtime showrunner of Fox's much-superior Bad Robot sci-fi epic "Fringe."
Forget Peter Weller as Robocop. Michael Ealy's near-future law enforcement android Dorian isn't even as much fun as the robot (or robotic) hovercycle cop who chased down the preteen James Tiberius Kirk in Abrams' "Star Trek." If you were hoping for something like Brent Spiner's Data with a badge you can forget that too. Dorian will make longtime TV viewers pine even for the mechanical man who warned Will Robinson and Zachary Smith of Danger!! on a weekly basis.
But Dorian may still be a bit more compelling than "Star Trek's" Karl Urban, whose John Kennex detective character is a bland pastiche of maverick-cop clichés. (Presented as the human half of a human-robot cop team, Kennex is actually a Steve Austin-y cyborg courtesy of the talking robot leg he gets around on.) The great Lili Taylor is similarly and sadly familiar as Kennex's squad-room superior, playing straight and boring the same sort of character Andre Braugher is milking for big laughs over on Fox's "Brooklyn Nine Nine."
The pilot's procedural elements are a snooze, following the familiar path of a detective out to avenge his slain partner.
Fox did not make available to critics the series' second episode

Angelinajolieangelalansburystevemartin2013_photo_galleryThe Academy kicked off awards season in its own way Saturday night with the presentation of this year's Honorary Oscars to Angelina Jolie, Steve Martin, Angela Lansbury and Piero Tosi at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Hollywood. Or, as Martin Short considers them, "The highest honor an actor can receive…in mid-November."
