Colbert's Sister Nabs Big Endorsement
Feb 16th 2013, 21:43

Rep. Jim Clyburn (R-S.C.) endorsed Elizabeth Colbert Busch Saturday in the race for Sen. Tim Scott's former House seat.

"We know what it's going to take to win that seat," Clyburn said at a union meeting in Hanahan, according to a video taken by Patch. "I'm going to be endorsing Elizabeth Colbert Busch today because I think it's important for us to get a nominee out on the Democratic primary that will have a chance at winning."

Clyburn emphasized Colbert Busch's work with unions in his endorsement. Patch reports:

The Democratic congressman said Colbert Busch in Congress would be the key vote needed to protect workers' rights. Clyburn's District 6 butts against much of District 1, which has been held by Republican for more than 30 years. Colbert Busch is running against Ben Frasier in the Democratic primary for the seat vacated by Sen. Tim Scott following his appointment to the U.S. Senate.

Colbert Busch promised to help unions, lamenting that "people aren't even aware of" the work unions in South Carolina and elsewhere are doing.

"The voices of the union -- of all unions -- need to be lifted up," Colbert Busch said.

On Jan. 2, Gov. Nikki Haley (R) ordered a special election to fill the House seat of Scott, who took the seat of former Sen. Jim DeMint. Party primaries in the race will take place March 19 and runoffs will be held on April 2.

The general election will take place on May 7, the AP reports.

Colbert Busch told the AP she wouldn't let her brother -- Stephen Colbert, host of Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report" -- overshadow her campaign.

"I'm so proud of what he is and what he has accomplished. But when people see what I have done and they know the work we have done and they know me as a person and a professional, it will be fine," Colbert Busch said.
