As I wrote yesterday, rank among films in the weekend (or even daily) box office is mostly irrelevant.  There is an annoying obsession with rank among box office pundits, and it's something I've whined about before (essay). Generally speaking, films aren't explicitly in competition with each other, but rather themselves in terms of budgets and reasonable expectations. Film box office isn't poker, it's blackjack.  Now You See Me barely nudged past After Earth for second place behind the still dominating Furious 6.  Great, but Now You See Me's $28 million weekend take would be incredibly impressive even if it were in eighth place while After Earth, with $27 million, would be a disappointment even if it was number 01  this weekend.
