'Homeland' Season 3 Trailer: Everybody Hurts

Homeland Season 3

The very first teaser for Homeland‘s third season hinted at a gritty thriller, as cryptic radio signals offered clues to Nicholas Brody’s current situation. The first full-length trailer for the show, however, gets far more emotional. And yes, there’s actual footage this time around, if still not a whole lot of dialogue. Check it out after the jump. (Obviously, there are major spoilers for Season 2 up ahead.)

Showtime posted the new trailer today. It’s jam-packed with footage from the new season, all set to the melancholy strains of “To Build a Home” by The Cinematic Orchestra, and teases some pretty surprising twists and turns for the characters.

There’s a lot to take in here, from Brody’s new hairdo (or rather, lack thereof) to Saul and Carrie’s impending testimony to Dana’s potential religious conversion — and possible sexting scandal? This being Homeland, though, I’m sure they’ll have even more shocks in store for us as the season goes on.

While Season 2 as a whole was far from perfect, it went out with a gut-puncher of a finale that left me whimpering “they broke Saul!” over and over. It feels right to me that everyone looks weepy and upset in this trailer. Besides, Claire Danes continues to have one of the best cry-faces on television. It’d be a shame not to let her show it off.

Despite all the tears, though, the video isn’t entirely without a sense of humor. If you were looking closely, you might’ve spotted the little Princess Bride reference they managed to slip in.

Season 2 left behind a lot of questions, the primary one being “and just where in the hell do they plan to go from here?” We look forward to finding out when Homeland returns September 29. Damian Lewis, Mandy Patinkin, Rupert Friend, Morena Baccarin, and Morgan Saylor reprise their roles in the new season.
