Zack Snyder's Man of Steel made a dynamic debut at the box office in the evening preceding its national release today. The Thursday box office total is $21 million. That's $9 million from regular midnight showings and $12 million from the advance-night screenings sponsored by Wal Mart that took place across the country last night. The Thursday night screenings make direct comparisons difficult and makes weekend predictions equally difficult, so if you'll pardon me I'll try to avoid speculation today. But the facts: The film made as much in Thursday evening and midnight showings as Superman Returns made in its first full day of play back in July 2006. That Bryan Singer effort opened on a Wednesday and earned $21 million, leading to a $52 million Fri-Sun and $83 million Wed-Sun debut.
