Wander Around Behind The Scenes With Malick On TO THE WONDER!

Beaks here...

"There was a lot of reading. The syllabus was big. I read Heidegger just because I know that Terry did a translation of Heidegger. I wanted to see if it would give me any insight. It gave me no insight."

If you've ever read anything about Terrence Malick's filmmaking process, you know that it is fluid, intuitive and, at times, confounding. In the case of his latest film, TO THE WONDER, there was no formal script. Few filmmakers could get away with this, but when you've got masterpieces like BADLANDS, DAYS OF HEAVEN and TREE OF LIFE on your resumé, your actors and crew members will follow your every whim without question - even when they haven't the slightest as to where the hell you're going.

Below is a four-part behind-the-scenes featurette that, if nothing else, shows you what making a movie with Malick looks like. As for insight, the above quote from Ben Affleck probably sums it up best. If nothing else, this was an excellent excuse for Affleck to hunker down and read some Heidegger.

If the second video doesn't immediately start up at the conclusion of the first, go to TheMovieBox to view the whole series

TO THE WONDER has already hit theaters in the U.K. It'll open in the U.S. on April 12, 2013.
