'How I Met Your Mother': James Van Der Beek Returns For Final Season Oct 18th 2013, 23:45, by laura.prudom@huffingtonpost.com (Laura Prudom) James Van Der Beek is returning for the final season of "How I Met Your Mother," HuffPost TV has confirmed. He'll reprise his role as Simon, Robin's (Cobie Smulders) ex-boyfriend, in the 12th episode of Season 9, titled "Bedtime Stories." Van Der Beek broke the news of his return via Twitter, after posting an instagram photo of the "HIMYM" script. Like many Americans, I'm working 2 jobs today.
