Today sees the release of Pain and Gain, which will be Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson's third of four wide-release studio film each month between February and May. Four major films, Snitch, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Pain and Gain, and Fast and Furious 6... all of these are major studio releases in various genres (the social issues drama, the fantasy cartoon adventure, the black comedy, and the pure action thriller) and all have done or are expected to do well financially. It's now time to acknowledge that Dwayne Johnson is perhaps finally an official movie star, after twelve years of trying his hand and doing all manner of studio product both good (The Rundown) and not-so-good (Race To Witch Mountain). But while he has been called 'franchise Viagra' for his apparent ability to enter an ongoing franchise mid-stream and boost the grosses, it's actually merely a matter of Johnson cannily picking projects that people might want to see him in without picking films that mostly rely on his would-be star power to succeed.
