The Great Gatsby pulled off something of a coup, earning a shocking $51.1 million this weekend. The Baz Lurhmen 3D adaptation of the classic F. Scott Fitzgerald novel was scheduled in a release slot, the unofficial second weekend of summer, where would-be blockbusters, especially Warner Bros' would-be blockbusters, go to die badly. The film was scheduled to open on Christmas Day of last year, but was moved into early May, setting off buzz that the would-be Oscar contender was somewhat of a dud. And reviews mostly bore that out, with a mixed-negative critical reaction. With a risky date change, a genuinely cursed release date, and trailers that impressed and repulsed in equal doses ("The Great Gatsby scored to Jay-Z tunes? You speak sorcery!"), there were rumblings that Warner Bros. was in trouble.
