This reprint from Dark Horse Presents #18-20 tells the tale of Captain Midnight himself, Jim Albright, inventor, adventurer and time tossed Nazi smasher. Declared KIA in 1944, The Captain explodes back into 2013 in a great opening of action and creative flying. When I first saw the cover to this issue, I thought the costume was a throwback to the WWII era of heroes and what they wore. After reading this issue, I see it is not just for cosmetic but practical (and awesome) reasons. This guy can fly and take over jets in mid-air! Very impressive debut, Midnight.
Part one artist Victor Ibanez's does a great job with the detailing of the aircrafts involved as well as the inventive action scenes of our hero in action. His fight scenes are clean and crisp. Second half artist Pere Perez also gets some nice flashback scenes to showcase his talents. I actually liked the redacted page. I was only mildly disappointed when it showed up so soon a few pages later. It makes sense that a whiz wouldn't be phased by being in 1944 one moment and suddenly being in 2013 the next. I like Joshua Williamson's little moments as Captain Midnight looks over a modern jet as is disappointed by its lack of progress. Our Captain is set to complete his mission. Better late than never, I always say.
The hook of this top secret mission and how it is still relevant in the present intrigues me. I wonder how long the cynical government Agent Jones and the fan boy-pilot Rick Marshall will underestimate our hero. This is a great primer for a series I hope continues to explore the present and the past of Super Genius Captain Midnight and his Secret Squadron.
