A number of specialties opened the first (official) weekend of summer, but nothing really popped. TWC‘s Unfinished Song managed reasonable numbers, opening in two locations with a $13,846 average, easily winning the numbers game in a ho-hum weekend otherwise dominated by the studios. Cohen Media Group‘s The Attack, meanwhile bowed in three theaters, grossing over $26K for an $8,784 PSA, while Magnolia‘s Danish produced A Hijacking opened 7 runs, grossing $42,500 ($6K-plus average). Samuel Goldwyn‘s wine doc Somm sipped a $4,500 average, although it was the number one documentary on the iTunes charts and fellow doc Downloaded took in $2,500 in one theater.
Terence Stamp and Vanessa Redgrave starter Unfinished Song found some traction among audiences seeking alterna-fare on the big screen. It played the Paris Theater in NYC and the Landmark in L.A. TWC noted Sunday that the film had “the biggest jump of any other movie from Friday to Saturday,” so perhaps word-of-mouth is giving the title a boost. “The picture plays really well and is counter programming against the bubble gum fare out there now,” noted Erik Lomis about the film. Unfinished Song will continue its trek into the top markets in the weeks ahead.
The specialties’ number two arrival The Attack bowed in two NYC theaters in addition to one in the U.S. capital. The Israel-set feature will have a chance to win over audiences in an additional 3-plus theaters next week. Distributor Cohen Media Group said it is committed to the film’s U.S. run and touted its pedigree, noting: “It’s prestigious and the director is a fabulous talent.”
RADiUS‘ 20 Feet From Stardom held its own in its second weekend, averaging $10,780 in six theaters. The doc added three locations in release after bowing with a $17,403 PSA in its first weekend. The crowd pleaser is also screening at the Provincetown International Film Festival this weekend, one of a number of fests including the Los Angeles Film Festival, Frameline and AFI Docs happening now.
A24 went fairly wide with Sofia Coppola‘s Cannes Un Certain Regard opener The Bling Ring in its second round. The film took in $2 million in 650 theaters, averaging just over $3K. The film’s opening PSA was an impressive $42K last weekend in its initial round of three theaters. Said A24 Sunday: “We are thrilled that Sofia’s latest had the opportunity to find fans all across the country and look forward to seeing it continue to grow over the coming weeks now that summer is officially upon us.”
Also among holdovers, IFC Films‘ Frances Ha and Roadside Attractions/Lionsgate‘s Mud hit milestones this week. Mud is just behind The Place Beyond The Pines with the largest cume among the titles still in specialty release. The film passed the $20 million mark in its ninth week of release, averaging $1,465 in 213 theaters. Noah Baumbach’s Frances Ha, meanwhile jumped the $3 million threshold in its sixth week. The black and white New York Film Festival debut averaged $1,360 in 140 theaters.
