In 1974 I traveled to Boston to attend the annual convention of S.A.M., the Society of American Magicians. I stayed with my Aunt and Uncle, traveled to the convention hotel by Boston MTA Trolly - and was I think the youngest magician there. I was 13 years old. At the time it didn't seem at all odd to me, in fact, I felt very much at home. Magicians were an unusual fraternity - both secretive and public. Excited to share their magical view of the world with an audience, and yet strangely insular and shy when not on stage. The word 'Geek' hadn't been invented yet, and neither had computers, the internet, or code - at least in any way that a 13 year old could access it - but I'm sure in retrospect I was a magic geek.
