The last thing I did before taking a midnight plane to Seoul was attend the Inside Llewyn Davis musical-performance party at the Buffalo Club. T-Bone Burnett produced and arranged the small-stage entertainment. Oscar Isaac, banjo aficionado Steve Martin, the Punch Brothers, the Milk Carton Kids, Sean and Sara Watkins (great material, guys!) and Rhiannon Giddens were among the performers. The vibe was warm and convivial all around. The low-key lighting was perfect, the hors d’oeuvres were great…everything about it was sublime.
A lot of big-time industry names were among the (mostly) standing-room listeners, including Joel and Ethan Coen, Davis producer Scott Rudin, N.Y. Times critic Manohla Dargis (standing four feet away from me), Barbra Streisand, James Brolin, Kris and April Tapley, John Goodman, Norman Lear, Rosanna Arquette, Steven Gaydos, Glenn Whipp, Sasha Stone and her boyfriend, Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen, et. al. Wait…was Jeff Sneider not there?
My favorite moments was the Punch Brothers rendition of “Tumbling Tumbleweeds” (is right out of the opening of The Big Lebowski, of course). I caught first 45 minutes before I had to leave for LAX so I missed Martin’s and Isaac’s set.
