Jessica Chastain & Vanessa Redgrave To Star In 'The Secret Scripture'
Nov 16th 2013, 02:50, by Kevin Jagernauth

While we haven't seen much of Jessica Chastain on the big scree in 2013, she's been no less busy. She's already got the two picture "The Disappearance Of Eleanor Rigby His & Hers" in the bag, Liv Ullman's "Miss Julie" has wrapped and she's currently in the midst of Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar." And continuing to mix up the projects she takes on, it looks like Chastain's next movie will be a drama that finds her returning to Ireland.

Producer Neal Pearson ("My Left Foot," "Dancing at Lughnasa") has revealed that Chastin and legend Vanessa Redgrave will star in the adaptation of Sebastian Barry's award winning "The Secret Scripture." The late Johnny Ferguson ("Gangster No. 1") penned the story about a 100 year-old mental patient whose decision to investigate her past shakes loose some troubling memories. Chastain and Redgrave will play the younger and older version of the the lead character. Here's the book synopsis for a better understanding:

The latest from Barry (whose A Long Way was shortlisted for the 2005 Booker) pits two contradictory narratives against each other in an attempt to solve the mystery of a 100-year-old mental patient. That patient, Roseanne McNulty, decides to undertake an autobiography and writes of an ill-fated childhood spent with her father, Joe Clear. A cemetery superintendent, Joe is drawn into Ireland's 1922 civil war when a group of irregulars brings a slain comrade to the cemetery and are discovered by a division of Free-Staters. Meanwhile, Roseanne's psychiatrist, Dr. Grene, investigating Roseanne's original commitment in preparation for her transfer to a new hospital, discovers through the papers of the local parish priest, Fr. Gaunt, that Roseanne's father was actually a police sergeant in the Royal Irish Constabulary. The mysteries multiply when Roseanne reveals that Fr. Gaunt annulled her marriage after glimpsing her in the company of another man; Gaunt's official charge was nymphomania, and the cumulative fallout led to a string of tragedies.

" 'The Secret Scripture' is a wonderful novel. The thing about Johnny's script is it's very character-driven and actor-driven, and it wouldn't work without the right actors. So we're lucky to have Jessica Chastain and Vanessa Redgrave," Pearson told IFTN. Production is slated to being next June in Sligo and Wicklow, but no mention of a director just yet.
