"Bling Ring," "The Past" and "Inside Llewyn Davis" might be out of the way, but there's still most of the really anticipated Cannes movies to come in the next week. And perhaps most eagerly awaited among them; "Only God Forgives." This time two years ago saw "Pusher" and "Bronson" helmer Nicolas Winding Refn move up to the big leagues with his acclaimed pulp crime tale "Drive," and he's reunited with his star Ryan Gosling for his new film, a Bangkok-set spiritual sequel that promises to be even more brutal than its predecessor.
Three new clips from the film have arrived over at The Film Stage, and they follow the trend of glimpses from the film so far by focusing on one of the most promising elements; Kristin Scott Thomas, playing widely against type as Jenna, the mother of Gosling's Julian, who comes to Bangkok to mastermind vengeance against Chang, the retired cop who killed her other son. The first two clips feature Scott Thomas in action, and she continues to be wildly entertaining as a sort of underworld Lucille Bluth, while the third, shorter snippet features Gosling going head to head with Chang (Vithaya Pansringarm). It continues to look very strong indeed, and we'll find out how the whole matches up when "Only God Forgives" premieres on Wednesday morning, with our review set to follow soon after.
