If the just-dropped “The Counselor” trailer is any indication, Ridley Scott and Cormac McCarthy make up the kind of Hollywood matchmaking that results in sheer cinematic brilliance.
Cormac McCarthy, best known on the big screen as the novelist behind the movie adaptations "The Road," "No Country for Old Men," and "All the Pretty Horses," takes his first step into the world of non-adaptive screenwriting with "The Counselor." Was there cause to be concerned that this transition wouldn't work for him? Absolutely not, if one is familiar with his work – and in case the author’s wildly successful track record weren't enough to assure the public, doubters needn't go beyond the cast list to find a little faith.
Michael Fassbender, Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem, Cameron Diaz, and Brad Pitt make for a fully loaded marquee, and though there's been much crossover among this group of A-listers, never before have they all appeared in one picture. The effect looks to be pure chemistry, pure thrill.
Director Ridley Scott is doing his part, as well, to bring clout to the roster; he's the director behind such epic films as "Prometheus," "Black Hawk Down," "Gladiator," "Blade Runner," and "Thelma and Louis." Scott's awards roster is pretty robust – but an Academy Award has not found its way yet onto his mantel. Will "The Counselor" change that? With only this sneak peek to go on, we're not going to doubt it.
