EXCLUSIVE: The weeklong early hiatus for midseason Fox comedy series Us & Them is becoming permanent. I’ve learned that the network has opted not to do more than the six episodes already in the can (plus the pilot). For now, Fox says it plans to air the produced episodes, but for all intents and purposes, the show is over, and the cast has been told they can take new jobs. Us & Them, which had 13-episode order, last week moved up a planned hiatus by two weeks to work on scripts. I had heard that Fox brass have had concerns about the tone of the series, which by definition — being a romantic comedy — is softer than the network’s other new comedies, like Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Dads, which are edgier. Fox, whose Tuesday comedy block has struggled this fall, has enough half-hour backup for midseason. In addition to Us & Them, Fox has new comedies Surviving Jack and Enlisted on tap and just gave a series order to Mulaney.
