Ah… hindsight. It’s always 20/20. For Gene Siskel I imagine the hindsight in this particular instance came on March 30th, 1992 when The Silence Of The Lambs won 5 Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director and Best Screenplay (adapted).
Of course, there are many Academy Award winning movies I personally can’t stand (Crash being a prime example) and there’s nothing wrong with sticking to your guns just because a bunch people like something you don’t. But still, in this review he has such an amazing amount of disdain for Jonathan Demme’s 1991 masterpiece it’s a little hard to believe. Ebert seems to be fairly on board with the pic, but Siskel can’t stomach any part of it.
Perhaps the most interesting thing about this video is that Siskel sort of redeems his argument by championing Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer. Still though… this is crazy talk.
