'An American In Paris' Stage Musical Has Hopes Of Broadway Stardom
Oct 17th 2013, 23:04, by THE DEADLINE TEAM

Hollywood and Broadway have had quite the symbiotic relationship historically and especially recently, and Vincente Minnelli’s classic MGM musical came out at the height of Broadway’s Golden Age. So it’s only fitting for a stage production of An American In Paris to target the Main Stem — even if it takes 60-odd years. A new musical based on the Gene Kelly-Leslie Caron film will premiere in the City of Light in December 2014 with an eye on crossing the Atlantic for a Broadway run the following spring. If the show transfers, it would come on the heels of another Best Picture Oscar winner making the jump to the Great White Way: Rocky The Musical is set to premiere in March. Of the 10 musicals to win Best Picture, only one — 1958′s Gigi, also also set in Paris and directed by Minnelli — spawned a Broadway show. It closed after four months. The new American In Paris features George and Ira Gershwin’s songs — the film was based on George’s 1928 orchestral composition — with a book by Craig Lucas (The Light In The Piazza, Prelude To A Kiss). Director-choreographer Christopher Wheeldon’s show will feature such memorable songs from the movie as ” ‘S Wonderful,” “I Got Rhythm” and “But Not For Me.”
