Weekend Of A Champion will be released in theaters beginning November 22 in NY via Submarine Deluxe (Chasing Ice) before rolling out nationwide. Parent company Submarine handled some U.S. rights to the pic when it premiered at Cannes after it was restored by Frank Simon and presented by RatPac Entertainment’s Rat Documentary Films. That came during a time racing movies were on the front burner — from the docu Senna to the Ron Howard-directed Rush, which found critical praise but couldn’t generate much horsepower at the box office when it hit the big screen at the end of September. Never shown in the U.S., the 1971 Roman Polanksi docu offered up a portrait of Formula 1 champ Jackie Stewart during his victory at the Monte Carlo Grand Prix. Forty years later, Polanski and Stewart met once again and in a postscript to the pic discussed the sport with a unique perspective. RatPac will make Champion available on Netflix after its theatrical run as part of a 12-picture deal to produce and acquire feature-length documentaries for the streaming service.
