'Happy Endings': Break-Up Leads To A Strange, Dark Play
Apr 15th 2013, 05:15

Another "Happy Endings" double-header proved to have serious consequences for one of the show's couples. For weeks now, Penny has been building toward her wedding to Pete, but a couple's game threw a wrench in all of that. Despite winning the game, and proving they knew the most about one another -- Jane did not take this well -- Penny also realized that Pete wasn't right for her.

She did the right thing, ending it when she did, but rather than go into a deep depression, she was jubilant and productive. She wrote a play and even got a tiny theater to put it on. But the play was her deflecting her feelings about what she'd done to Pete.

In the play, Penny was the Black Plague, destroyer of lives and love. It was in the middle of the performance that she realized what feelings she was really trying to process, so Brad had to jump in and save the performance, as well as talking Penny down. With the help of her friends, she was able to come to terms with her decision and start to move forward.

The AV Club thought the break-up was inevitable, "as Nick Zano had not gotten much character development, but handled nicely and with the right amount of melancholy (not too much) for a show like this."

Unfortunately, fewer and fewer people are seeing "Happy Endings" on its new night. The latest block of episodes hit a new series low for the comedy.

Come back for more "Happy Endings" every Friday at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
