Speakeasy‘s Christoper John Farley saw Woody Allen‘s Blue Jasmine (Sony Classics, 7.26) last night, and he’s reporting that Cate Blanchett is more or less playing Ruth Madoff (or…you know, a Ruth Madoff-y character) and that her performance “will likely generate early Oscar buzz.” And that Alec Baldwin (also strong) is the Bernie-like figure, doing time for crooked financial shenanigans and leaving Blanchett to deal with the economic and emotional aftermath. Pic also stars Bobby Cannavale, Louis C.K., Andrew Dice Clay, Sally Hawkins and Peter Sarsgaard.
I hate, hate, hate that I can’t insert URL embed codes, or that I haven’t been able to do so recently and throughout most of the Cannes Film Festival. Effing crap WordPress. Here’s the Speakeasy story URL: http://blogs.wsj.com/speakeasy/2013/05/30/woody-allen-takes-on-the-madoff-scandal-in-new-movie/?mod=wsj_valettop_email.
