Steven Spielberg Sows Rumors of 'The Grapes of Wrath' Remake
Jul 9th 2013, 18:27, by Tom Blunt

In these trying economical times, John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath seems like an obvious candidate for a comeback. This detail has not escaped the eyes of Steven Spielberg, who has announced plans to produce a new film version. I’m all for a new remake — the 1940 version simply stops about halfway through the book’s story — but I hope Spielberg doesn’t end up directing from the producer’s chair. In his hands, “War Horse” turned out looking like it all happened in front of a green screen, despite the fact it was mostly shot in the English countryside. It’s all too easy to see how a piece of intellectually charged cinema like “Grapes” could lose all its nuance and come out looking like a wartime propaganda film.

Many Americans learned their love of reading from Levar Burton via “Reading Rainbow.” Now the actor/director is reaching out with some new life lessons, like how to survive a routine traffic stop. In a CNN appearance last week, Burton reminded us of the hazards that black men face in dealing with the police, and how even famous figures like himself must take extra precautions to avoid potentially deadly misunderstandings. That’s a hard thing to hear coming from a childhood hero!

Back in April I was looking forward to Amanda Plummer and Bradley Dourif lighting up off-Broadway in “The Two Character Play.” I’m glad to report the show’s enjoying a healthy run through September 1, and is a must-see for Tennessee Williams devotees. Here’s a review that properly articulates my own impressions of the show. Still looking forward to Plummer’s especial brand of crazy in “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” in which she’ll play the eccentric Wiress.

How far would you go to scare the pants off of the one you love? Watch below and you’ll see one man’s elaborate attempt to create the illusion that the little girl from “The Ring” is crawling out of his girlfriend’s television.
