Fede Alvarez Off To Dante's Inferno

Evil Dead director in talks for video game adaptation

After getting Hollywood’s – and, more directly, Sam Raimi’s – attention with giant robot invasion short Panic Attack, director Fede Alvarez was handed the chance to remake Evil Dead to bloody effect. Now he’s ready to switch gears to tackle a game adaptation, entering talks with Universal to handle Dante’s Inferno.

The Electronic Arts title takes its inspiration from Dante Alighieri’s work, the kick-off to the epic poem known collectively as The Divine Comedy. Our hero, Dante Aligheri is a knight who, with the help of the poet, Virgil ventures into the nine rings of hell to rescue his beloved Beatrice. In the process, he becomes an unwitting pawn in an ancient war between Heaven and Hell. As Supernatural’s Winchester brothers could tell you, that is not something you want to get involved with.

Universal, however, definitely wants a part of it, having won a bidding war for the rights to the game back in 2008. Since then, X2’s Dan Harris, The Pacific’s Bruce McKenna and Monsters: Dark Continent writer Jay Basu have all taken a crack at the script. If he makes a deal, Alvarez will no doubt take his own pass on the screenplay before it starts shooting.
